Need help finalizing Ireland Itinerary

My husband and I will be spending 4.5 days in Ireland, flying into and out of Dublin for my 30th birthday. We really want to spend some time on the West coast, as well as experience Dublin. I am looking to get your opinion on this itinerary to see if it's possible:

•We arrive in Dublin the first day at 5:10AM (overnight flight from Boston)

•Take the 7:30AM train from Dublin Heuston station to Galway. Get to Galway at 10:15. Breakfast and a little exploring around Galway. Rent a car with Budget in Galway Center, drive to the Cliffs of Moher, spend some time there and drive to Dingle for an overnight. Can we do all this in one day? We'd ideally like to get to Dingle by 5PM to experience the town in the daylight. (What time does it get dark in early April in Dingle?)

•Day two: wake up in Dingle, leave early to do the Ring of Kerry. Take a late train out of Killarney station back to Dublin. It looks like there is a train that leaves at 7:30PM) Sleep in Dublin.

•Day 3,4, 5 - spend in Dublin. Fly out of Dublin on Day 5 at 2PM.

I realize this is probably an aggressive itinerary but we really want to see as much as possible while we're out there. Thoughts? Suggestions on where to stay in Dingle?

Figured it was too aggressive. Would it make more sense to take the train directly to Tralee and skip the cliffs of Moher all together?

it's too much....you only have 4-1/2 days including arrival day and you plan to spend 2-1/2 of those in dublin....i think anything very far from dublin would just be wasted time getting there and back to dublin....maybe do something on the east coast and forget the rest....

day 1 is suicide....after arrival on an international flight, too dangerous with jet lag bound to wack you easily before you could reach dingle....no point in driving to dingle to only spend the night....

also, not sure why you would go to tralee if you skipped the cliffs?....

not sure why you would spend 2-1/2 days out of that in dublin and then still want to see as much as you can...???....

do rethink this, too much in too short a time....sorry....

Yes, your day once is crazy!

I would normally suggest staying in Dublin at the beginning of your trip to get adjusted but since you are flying from Boston and are arriving so early you may as well use that first groggy morning to take a train to Kerry.

Take the train to Killarney and get your car at Budget, just a short walk from the train station. (exit train station and turn right to walk past the Malton Hotel, then to your left down East Avenue Road. At cinema look right and cross to the International Hotel.) Dingle is only about 1.5 hours from Killarney and you might have had a chance to nap or adjust on the train. Skip doing the Ring of Kerry and enjoy more of Dingle or head back to Killarney and explore the National Park. Drop off car and head back to Dublin.

If you still want to do the ROK then spend a second night in Dingle, do ROK on day 3 and then head back to Dublin that evening.

After landing in Dublin, catch a flight to Kerry Airport, rent a car there & see what you can see in 2 days....then fly back to DUB on day 3.

I appreciate the responses...

What if we did this per Oma14's suggestion:

Day 1: First train to Killarney at 7AM (possibly get 3 hrs of sleep on train) - rent car - drive to Dingle. Spend the day and night in Dingle.

Day 2: Wake up early to do the Ring of Kerry and take the last train back from Killarney back to Dublin at 7:45PM.

Is it doable to do the ROK in one day from Dingle? How long does it take to drive the whole route?

There's no rush for us to get back to Dublin that night b/c it will be Good Friday and all the pubs will be closed.

Do this seem more doable?

I was thinking of having them fly from DUB to KIR too but thought that they would be even less ready to start driving in Ireland after a second flight and that after paying for luggage and fees on the Kerry flight that the train would work best. Currently the cheap flight from DUB to KIR is E40 plus taxes and fees, the train is between E10 and E37 - no fees. Also the first flight out of DUB to KIR does not leave until 11:10 am and so they will have 6 hours of waiting to get into KIR at 12:05. If they can make the 7:00am at Heuston (and that would be tight) they can be in Killarney by 10:23, 30 mins before their flight would have left Dublin.

Yes, post 6 is more doable but I think spending the extra night in Dingle is more practical if you still wish to drive the ROK. You say "Spend the day and night in Dingle" but you will not arrive there until lunchtime or soon after assuming no delay in Killarney.

As already noted, I would not depend on being on a 7.00 or even a 7.30 train from Heuston if scheduled to arrive from the US about 5.30. It may possible to do it but it may be tight and you should allow for a delay on arrival or in getting through immigration etc. Travel time from the airport to the station by taxi should be about 30 minutes at that time of day as traffic would still be light beofre rush hour.

Also, if planning do doze on the train, note that services from Dublin to Killarney generally involve a change of trains at Mallow - make sure you are awake at that point of the journey!

Good Morning. Bright sunny and cloudless.

Yes cab from the Airport to Heuston station, train to Killarney Hire a car for 2 days so you can see a very small part of Ireland through tired eyes.

Why not just stay in Killarney and take the bus tours of Dingle and the Ring. or do the sensible thing for such a short visit and base yourself in Dublin or if you must see the first 2 peninsulas under the Shannon. Fly into Shannon or Cork and forget Dublin.
