Would like input on 10-day itinerary

Hi TA Folks,

Would love some input on my itinerary! I'm traveling in mid-May with my husband and we're avid hikers - and while hiking isn't the primary focus on this time, we'd love to visit some national parks, and also fit in some small (1-3 hour) to moderate (4-5 hour) hikes/walks. We'd like to fit that in with seeing some sights and doing things that help us experience the culture of an area.

1 - Fly into Dublin from Boston (get in early, 5:30am). See Dublin.

2 - Get rental car, drive to Galway. See Clonmacnoise on the way. See Galway.

3 - Connemara - walk. Stay Galway.

4 - Aran Islands (Probably Inishmor, rent bikes). Stay Galway.

5 - Drive to Dingle. (See The Burren on the way? Small walk?) Stay Dingle.

6 - Dingle Penninsula. Drive/walk. Stay Dingle.

7 - Killarney National Park, Gap of Dunloe. Stay Killarney.

8 - Drive Killarney to Kilkenney, see Cashel and/or Cahir on the way. See some of the artisans around Kilkinney. Stay Kilkenney.

9 - Drive to Glendalough, see the ruins, walk. Stay Glendalough/Laragh.

10 - Drive back to Dublin, fly out. :(

Any feedback? Anything I'm missing? Is this too much? Am I missing a lot by not seeing the Cliffs of Moher or ROK? Also, is it realistic to be staying in Glendalough the night before we fly out? The flight wouldn't be until the afternoon.

Thanks so much! What would we all do without the great folks at tripadvisor to help us?

All the best,

J.

Glendalough to Dublin airport should only take 60/70 minutes. Be aware though, that you are required to check in 3 hours in advance of flights to the USA, and also allow time to return your car.

Connemara National Park would be nice for a hike/walk and you can also climb Diamond Mountain in that park.

On day 3, rather than coming back to Galway, you might consider staying in Clifden, and on day 4 drive to Rossaveel (60/70 minutes - http://g.co/maps/5hksz ) to get the ferry to the Aran Islands.

Day 5: Cliffs are cliffs, IMO, but the Cliffs of Moher would not be too far out of your way on this day, and you could shorten your journey to Dingle, a bit, by taking the ferry accross the Shannon, from Killimer to Tarbert - http://g.co/maps/j648h - unless of course you wish to visit Ennis and Limerick.

Thanks for the heads up on the airport, I'll be sure to schedule in plenty of time. I like the idea of staying in Clifden, that would save us some driving. And even if i don't see the Cliffs, I like the idea of the ferry to shorten the drive. Thanks!!

If you haven't bought flights yet, you might find it easier to reverse the order of days 2-10 of your trip and fly out of Shannon.

@KerryEamsKerry Wow, those pics look amazing. Yes, I could definitely switch to two nights there. Am going to get a hiking book this weekend to read up on the routes.

@blackgreen I was looking for that initially, too, but the airfare seemed to go up substantially for me by flying into Dublin and out of Shannon. Will keep checking before I book, though, because that does seem to be the easiest route.

Thanks!!

Skipping the cliffs and ROK a good idea on this trip. +1 to staying near airport, traffic or a sheep or lord knows what could slow you down big time and trying to get to a flight under stress will ruin any holiday.

A couple of links for Connemara walks

http://www.walkconnemara.com/events.html

roundstone-connemara.com/Roundstone-Walking-…

Sky Road Drive From Clifden take the sky road as far as the Lower sky which passes between the coastguard station and Clifden castle. The low road runs along the bay before climbing (fairly steep and narrow) to re-join the top road, at the junction turn right and the viewing point is ¼ of a mile along as you return to Clifden. The best views are found taking the top road in this direction up above the bay and along over the Coastguard station. On the hill to your right as you approach the town is the D’Arcy memorial, unfortunately this is a bit of a walk from a safe place to park the car. The view of the town and its 2 churches is a wonderful sight from this point on a bright day.

Clifden 200th anniversary week runs from the 25th May and the County Fledh on the 17th
