I am planning our 17 day driving tour. We have accommodations, but now I need to start figuring out tentative plans for our days.
Day 1 we arrive around 8 AM at DUB and are staying at the Merrion Hotel. My understand is that this is centrally located. We will likely take a taxi to the hotel and drop off bags and start touring. Probably head back for a nap and then back out for a bit. Day 2 we will leave early to go back to the airport and pick up our rental car and then head to Belfast.
Some Dublin questions:
1. How much is the taxi for 2 people to the city center?
2. On the way back to the airport, is there a cheaper public transit option? Or is taxi just easier?
3. Given that we are centrally located, does it make any sense to do the HOHO buses? I was leaning toward no, but wanted an expert opinion.
We will be in town on a Saturday in early July.
Here are my tentative "things to see" in our one day. I am a HUGE history buff and love old architecture and churches. Don't drink beer, so we could care less about any tours of distilleries/brewhouses.
Trinity College - wander around campus (I'm a professor, so I LOVE visiting campuses). If a tour is leaving at the time we arrive, great! If not, no biggie. Visit Book of Kells.
National Gallery (possibly, need to see what Van Goghs they have)
Wander Merrion Square & St. Stephens (possibly do my day 2 run in one of the parks - which one?)
Grafton Street - leisurely stroll
Kilmainham Gaol - Need to take taxi. Is it worth the long tour?
Temple Bar stroll that night.
I could easily axe National Gallery (unless it's an amazing collection - I am an art lover, but that's not what this trip is about; that's what last summer's trip to Rome was for) and maybe the jail if I needed to.
Thoughts or tips?
Oh! One more....we're touring for quite a while and I think it's worth it to get the Heritage Pass and Touring Guide. Yes?
