Is this any better? Got rid of Donegel County

6/18, 6/19 - Dublin

6/20 - drive to Portrush, see Newgrange on way - not sure if will stop in Belfast or not - know this is a long day - maybe 5 hours of driving total? Sleep in Portrush

6/21 - Do Dunluce Castle, Giant Causeway and Carrick-a-rede Rope bridge, Drive to and sleep in Derry, figure about 1 1/2 to get from antrim coast to Derry - not too much driving

6/22 - Tour Derry in the AM, this will be a long driving day - get to Galway - figure 5 hours driving

6/23 - Tour Galway in AM, drive to Doolin, see Cliffs of Moher, stay in Doolin, only about 2 hours of driving

6/24 - From Doolin, go to Ennis, see The Burren on way, only about an hour of driving, stay in Ennis

6/25 - From Ennis, go to Killimer and take car ferry across to tarbert and then drive to Dingle - maybe 4 hours of driving? Stay in Dingle, 6/25, 26 and 27

Alternatively, could only stay 2 nights in Dingle and add another night in another location or one of the existing locations? By my calculation, this is three days of long drives - the 20th, 22nd and 25th

If Portrush and Dingle are musts - is this more reasonable?

Why are Portrush and Dingle "Must see" ??

What tells you that you cannot have a better holiday simply by taking your time and using the days you have earmarked South of Shannon Airport to make the rest less rushed and shorter stages.

OK Tony Hates Dingle! Cra* ... Tony doesn't see why what should and could be a good relaxed holiday is scheduled into a mad dash for the sake of a single location being perceived totally indispensable.

My sister had told me to definitely see the Giant Causeway so I had started the trip there. Portrush is the one hotel that if I cancel now I'll be on the hook for $. I guess I just fell in love with the description of Dingle. BUT, I could forgo it still. Some people seem to say its not to be missed and others not so much. If Dingle is really not all its cracked up to be - I can certainly change it. My husband works with some people from Ireland who say if you are flying out of Shannon absolutely see Dingle. But maybe it's not worth it.... I'm so confused!!!

I don't hate Dingle.

People say I hate Dingle because when it comes to Itineraries like yours It makes no sense. Dingle is not compulsory. Anything the Dingle peninsular has to offer can be found in a multitude of places around the Island of Ireland.

I have a reputation because I tell it like it is and have a passion for the whole of our Island which is bigger than a small part with a huge reputation.

You want Horse riding, Has Dingle got the only equestrian centre, You want a couple of beaches, Achill Island (NW of Westport) has 5 Blue flag beaches. You want Dramatic coastline, The coast north of Clare especially north of my much loved Connemara is amazing (and you are going to miss it all). You want a lone Dolphin, Mallin Head has 5 Killer whales.

The list go's on..

It is your Holiday, you are spending a small fortune and hoping for the best experience you can get.

Just have a sit down, look at the map and see how you can get the most out of this 10 day experience. If that includes Dingle then fine, no problem but in order to keep those last 2 days in place consider what else you have to take away.

Now watch the regulars rip my comments apart !!

Tony, thanks so much.... would love specifics on where else to stay or spend more time in to forgo Dingle! Should I add Westport, Doolin, Aran Islands? Where specifically can I find the horseback riding?

Ok - I'm sold - sorry for being so stubborn! Despite the great southern itinerary set out by Sardina (are you SG?) - I think I'll forgo Dingle and concentrate on the north. Partly because I have an unrefundable hotel in portrush and also because my son has a love of history and politics that I think will make belfast and Derry very interesting for him. I'm also aware that we are traveling in high season and I'm hoping the north is a little less crowded w tourists than the south.

I plan to wake up early to finish hotel reservations during Ireland waking hours. Thanks everyone - I look forward to planning a southern Ireland trip soon!

lol, Tony - I'm certainly Not going to fall out with you over "to do Dingle, or not to do Dingle" ;-))

I simply based my two itineraries around Dingle because lkornfeld originally had it down as a "must see".

@lkornfeld - nice to see that you're flexible and ready to listen to advice :-)

If you don't want to lose $ on your Portrush accommodation, then it certainly makes sense to forget Dingle and concentrate on other areas - and you will have a super time and get to see and experience some fabulous scenery and interesting sites - promise!

The only things I might change from tony's itinerary - and these are just my personal preferences and experiences:

After visiting Derry, I'd spend 2, if not 3 nights in Donegal. I was very much taken with this beautiful county. The Inishowen Peninsula lies a short drive from Derry, has gorgeous scenery and some fascinating historic sites dating back to prehistory:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=36915925@N08&q=bocan&m=text

How about this for riding on the north coast of Donegal at Dunfanaghy:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=36915925@N08&q=dunfanaghy&m=text

http://www.dunfanaghystables.com/

There's also Glenveagh National Park, and if you're interested in art, Glebe House isn't far from Glenveagh:

heritageireland.ie/en/…

Then across on the west coast you have Slieve League Cliffs - the highest sea cliffs in Europe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slieve_League

http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=36915925@N08&q=slieve+league&m=text

From west coast of Donegal I'd then head down to co. Galway and spend

2 nights in 1 location in co. Galway, rather than 1 Clifden, 1 Galway - just to save packing/checking in, out etc.

From Connemara, drive down through the Burren to Ennis for your final night. Have you considered my suggestion of Burren Birds of Prey? We visit several times each year, as my daughter and I are fascinated by the birds. The folk who work there are very knowledgeable and we learn something new every time we visit.

As you don't leave Shannon until 3.30pm, you'll have time for shopping/sight-seeing in Ennis in the morning, or consider visiting Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, or Craggaunowen:

shannonheritage.com/Attractions/Craggaunowen/

You know, it doesn't matter which route you choose, as both mine and tony's cover some great places. Just bear in mind that you'll be travelling mostly on rural roads and it does take time to travel between places. Use the aa routeplanner, then add a further 20% to the quoted times for a fairly accurate figure:
