Baby Giraffes - Dublin and Cork

There has been a lot of publicity about the new baby Rothschild Giraffe called Tamu who made her debut in Dublin Zoo last week.

We were lucky enough to visit Dublin Zoo last Sunday to see her and she is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately she wouldn't fit in my car, even with the sun roof open!! Dublin Zoo itself was buzzing last Sunday - the weather was good and we had a lovely time.

However, we also visited Fota Island yesterday and they have TWO baby giraffes, who appear to be smaller than Tamu. Both were with their Mums, unlike Tamu last Sunday. The Giraffe area (its not really an enclosure) is much bigger in Fota than in Dublin. There is also a greater feeling of space in Fota (in Dublin at times, one felt a bit claustrophobic, despite the new extension to the gardens).

Dublin Zoo has a lot of the "large" animals such as elephants, rhinos and lions. Fota doesn't have those but it does have cheetahs and a cheetah run at 4pm.

So, if you want to see a baby giraffe and you can't make it to Dublin, then Fota has a couple of lovely ones as well.

Both are very much worth seeing and would make a lovely day out during the last few days of the school summer holidays.

Fota is adding another 27 acres of land and will give it over to preservation efforts for Asian animals, including tigers and rhinos. I'm not sure what the timeframe is though.

That sounds fabulous Black Green.

Our kids have been to a number of excellent animal parks including Paignton in Devon and Zooparc de Beauval in St. Aignan in the Loire Valley and they are totally nuts about Fota.
