Travel Shannon to Dublin for Family of 6

Hi - Husband has business trip in Dublin Aug 5-7. We are trying to plan addiltional travel to see as much as we can prior to being in Dublin. So we thought we would fly to Shannon July 28 or 29 then work our way south and west ending in Dublin on the 5th of August. We have to be back in states by Aug 9 which is why we are beginning in Shannon. We would be renting a vehicle. I realize we only have 5-6 days and I would like to hit a variety of highlights along the way. Kids are from 17 to 24 so basically all adults travelling. We like the outdoors and also like castles, history and food! Ending in Dublin and taking in the city at that point. Would prefer to overnight in bigger towns/cities that offer various accomodations and dining options.

We traveled in Scotland 2 summers ago with a hired tour guide and we moved around every 1-2 days. I am a little apprehensive about driving but the more I read the more I think we will be fine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I certainly will use this forum as I narrow things down. Thanks

Lisa

Just be aware that the 5th August is a Bank Holiday in Ireland. I would be surprised if any company will be doing business that day. Check things again!!

This is also probably the busiest time of the year for tourism so prices will be high and places will be busy. You will also need to book in advance.

I would suggest you go straight from Shannon to Killarney having hired a car. Stay in Killarney for a few nights and visit Dingle. The Ring of Kerry will be busy at this time so the Ring of Beara would be more interesting. www.bearatourism.com/

You could visit Bunratty Castle and Folk Park on your way to Killarney shannonheritage.com/Attractions/BunrattyCast…

Also in Killarney is Muckross House and Gardens - fabulous. www.muckross-house.ie and nearby Torc Waterfall.

You could move on - after a few days to Waterford or Wexford. Dunmore East in Co. Waterford is beautiful www.dunmorewebcams.com/

http://www.discoverdunmore.com/tourism/web

From here you could see Waterford City (Norman settlement. Reginald's Tower is interesting) and Hook Head Lighthouse, the oldest continuously working lighthouse in the world hookheritage.ie/ You could also visit Kilkenny City from here.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input. Yes the dates are correct. This is for a retail business and retailers work on holidays! Hopefully as i hear more we can solidify an itinerary.

You'll be absolutely fine driving, have no fears.

I'm going to buck the trend and keep you away from tourist central locations and suggest a city tour that will end in Dublin.

You'll arrive in Shannon tired off an overnight flight, don't attempt to drive too far. I will suggest that you head for Limerick, approx 15mls away. Limerick is a city of approx 100k and offers a wide variety of hotels, b&bs, restaurants, pubs, music, things to do, outdoor activities, history, castles, 2 cathedrals, ancient sieges etc Visit www.limerick.ie for more info.

From Limerick I would head south to Cork, approx 60mls. Cork is a bustling city with loads to see and do. Day trips to kiss the Blarney Stone, see the departure point of the Titanic in Cobh, the foode town of Kinsale. http://www.cork-guide.ie/index.html

From Cork head east to Waterford, http://www.waterfordtourism.com/ From blaas to Reginalds Tower, Waterford will keep you busy.

And finally to Dublin, 100 mls north. Dublin will keep you entertained with things to do. Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells, Kilmainham Gaol, Guinness Storehouse, http://www.visitdublin.com/

www.aaireland.ie for maps, routes, milage etc

Enjoy your visit.

Draw a straight line from Shannon to Dublin and there are a couple of things in the way, Our cottage which is insignificant and Lough Derg, Ireland's 3rd largest lake.

With 6 days you can chose to go above or below, possibly a bit of both. The south route covered above,#3... You could though head north see the Cliffs maybe Dysert O'Dea http://www.dysertcastle.com/ and overnight Galway. Then to Clifden (Dun Ri). from There to Donegal for a night, Through Derry see the Peoples gallery and Bogside artists. Night in Portrush (Avarest guest house) then a night in Belfast before ending in Dublin.

That's a quick flash road trip in 6 days. For a more leisurely approach you could opt to start with a couple of nights in Ennis, using the town as a base for county Clare, then Galway as a base for a couple of days, see the Connemara maybe Inis Mor and then back to Dublin spending a night in the Midlands, Birr? see Clonmacknoise, Tullamore and Lockes Distillery on the way.

Thank you Lightblue 7 and tony2phones. Your info is most helpful and I always find locals offer the best tips. I like the idea of using a base for a couple of nights in various cities and the day trips out. I had thought about just staying in Dublin the entire time and taking excursions out from there either day or overnight, but thought we would experience more driving ourselves.

Has anyone used bandbireland.com to book accomodations? If not what site do you use and where do you look for reviews...other than tripadvisor.com of course!

B&B Ireland is mainly Voucher places usually out a way or less popular central higher price than comparable places. Of course that is a personal opinion based on several years of not finding anywhere suitable for personal requirements on their site.

Go Ireland is my preferred site http://www.goireland.com/ but if you sort an itinerary just ask for recommendations on the forum.

I might suggest Bay View in Kilkee http://www.bayviewkilkee.com/ In Killarney then Sunnybank http://www.sunnybankbb.com/ or The Eviston in the centre get an upgrade mid range room http://www.evistonhouse.com/ The Danny Mann has tour bus trrad every night but you might want to try O'Connors or Tattler Jacks. Consider Kilkenny for the last leg
