a few questions

I am planning my first trip to Ireland in Oct with my husband. We plan to rent a car.

first question.... We are flying into Dublin and staying for 3 days. Do we need to rent a car from the airport or should we wait for when we leave. We are staying at Ashling Hotel

2. Is there a cheaper way to rent a car? they want $2000 hold on our credit card.

3. our itinerary is:

Dubliln for 3 days Ashling Hotel

drive to Kilkenny stay at Pembroke (go to Waterford Crystal)

stop at Blarney Castle on the way to Kerry (Ballyseede Castle x 2 days, drive Ring of Kerry during that stay)

after that stay go to Dromoland Castle for a night (see Cliffs of Moher) Do I need 2 nights here?

then head back to Dublin.

Is that doable?

Im sure I have many more questions that I will be posting but these are the ones I can think of. I have been researching for awhile and sometimes I think I just go into overload.

Thanks

1. I'd recommend waiting until you're done with Dublin to pick up your hired vehicle. From what I've heard driving/parking in-city is a nightmare. But definitely reserve your vehicle before your trip, especially if you want an automatic!

2. Did you decline the CDW/Super CDW insurance offered through the car company? Are you trying to use insurance offered by a credit card instead? What company are you looking at using?

You definitely don't want your hire car whilst staying in Dublin. Recommend you use the aircoach (or a taxi - more expensive, though!) to travel from the airport into the city centre:

http://www.aircoach.ie/

Then either return to the airport to collect your car, or pick it up from a city centre location (Hertz has an office from where it's an easy drive out to the motorway).

Use the HoHo bus to travel around the city - it will take you to all the interesting sites and sights:

As for car rental, I think you may have declined the super cdw insurance, which is why the car hire company is asking for a $2000 hold on your card. Car hire/rental explained in detail here:

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g186591-c138899/Irela…

I think that most folk who rent a car in Ireland would recommend taking out the super cdw insurance - even though it seems expensive! Replacing a wing mirror or paying for a dent in the car could cost you alot more - and spoil your holiday!

Itinerary:

Blarney Castle isn't really "on the way" to Tralee from Kilkenny; expect the drive to take around 4.5hrs. If you really want to see Blarney and the Ring of Kerry, it might make more sense to stay in Kenmare or Killarney, as both the afore-mentioned are "on" the Ring of Kerry, whereas Tralee lies beyond the Ring, and closer to Dingle Peninsula.

If you're looking for something a bit "special" then consider these two hotels near Kenmare:

http://www.sheenfallslodge.ie/

http://www.parkkenmare.com/

and Kenmare is a really pretty little town with a great choice of restaurants:

If you're already booked into Ballyseede, then consider visiting Dingle Peninsula instead of the Ring of Kerry:

and if you're visiting early October, you may be in the right place to enjoy the Dingle Food Festival, which takes place 3-6 October:

Kenmare to the Cliffs of Moher is around 4hrs drive; from Tralee: approx. 3hrs.

Lots to see and do in/around Dromoland - apart from enjoying the Castle and it's grounds, so 2 nights would give you more time in beautiful Clare:

Beyond the Cliffs lies the Burren:

closer to Dromoland:

Presumably you'll be spending your final night at a location near Dublin airport if you're departing transatlantic? Bear in mind that it's around 3hrs drive from west back to Dublin airport environs, and you need 3hrs check-in for transatlantic flights.

No chance of flying out of Shannon to save yourselves the drive back east??

3. Re: a few questions

I am renting the car as part of a package from exploring Ireland. I think i remember seeing offers for an additional $15 a day for extra insurance. So I should get the additional insurance?

Thank you for all the help. I will certainly apply all this to my trip.

We were planning on going to scotland and or to Belfast after Clare so we cant leave from Shannon.

There are many threads here on car hire in Ireland discussing these issues with CDW and SCDW and suggestions for good deals on car hire. I suggest you do a little search through the forums.

@ nitenursing

Yes, I recommend taking out the super cdw for peace of mind.

If you want to drop the car at Belfast you'll have to enquire whether there are any extra charges to leave the car in a different jurisdiction (however, if you were planning to drop the car at Shannon, for example, usually, there aren't charges for 1-way rentals within the same country)

If you opt to travel from Ireland to Scotland, bear in mind that Aer Lingus fly from Shannon to Edinburgh.

Some useful information about car hire on a thread today: tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g186591-i88-k621…

Recommends www.icarhireinsurance.com

Looks like a great deal but read the fine print. Note also that the car hire company will probably still put a hold for €2000 on your credit card and charge you for any damage, which you will then have to claim back from your insurer. Check with the company you are hiring from.
