Cork to Killarney

We were going to drive from Cork to Killarney - AAireland says it will take 1.5 hours. Is there anything that we would want to stop and see along the way to the point where we should plan extra time?

No, Not really. Unless you want to do a side trip to Guagán Barra forest park. This will add 3 hours to your itinerary. (driving off route and spending about 2 hours in Guagán). It's a beautiful forest park, the source of our River Lee and is said to be where St Finbarre (Patron saint of Cork) set up his first monastery.

Alternatively you might like to stop for lunch at The Mills Inn in the village of Ballyvourney, which is about half way between Cork city and Killarney.

Yes, 90 minutes is how long the journey takes me.

Jamie, bus is the cheapest option. Cost is €18 single ticket and €24 return. There is a bus between Killarney and Cork approx. every hour. The journey takes just under 2 hours (slower than by car as there are a number of interim stops)

Sometimes you may be able to get cheaper tickets when you buy online. Alternatively you can purchase your ticket at the bus station or from the bus driver

Here is the timetable. The bus journey is very pleasant and interesting.

There is also a train service between cork and Killarney, but it is more expensive, and one change is required at Mallow

There is no need to take a taxi.

There's a small number of direct trains (06:45, 08:55, 20:55), which are faster than the bus. It's worth noting that you can actually take the 07:00 to Dublin, connect in Mallow and arrive at the same time as the 06:45 direct.

For reasons best known to Irish Rail, they do not sell tickets online for direct services and they do not publish fare information. According to the unofficial fare calculator on railusers.ie (railusers.ie/passenger_info/fare_calc_2013.p…), the cost is €26.80 single, €38.80 open return and day return.
