What is the best tour company for Ireland?

I know, it would be better to go on our own, but one of us is a complete coward about things unknown, getting lost, iffy hotels. And it is always the other one's fault..... So, we have learned that an escorted tour is the best way to save our otherwise fine marriage. We would like to do a 7 to 9 day overview tour of Ireland. Some of the companies are getting mixed reviews. Thoughts? Thanks.

Your Q is well intended but we need more info as it depends on your perspective of 'what's best'. CIE Tours is around since Adam was a boy and are past masters at the escorted tour business. I replied elsewhere a little while ago for a daughter who has graduated that I didn't think it suitable for my two girls as the clientele tend to be older settled folks who take things at a certain pace. This might suit you and then again it might not. Now Paddywagon, as the name suggests, is a good touring company linked to a youth hostel chain that I could recommend as the 'best' if you are a backpacker.

Both of these are Coach based, and coach travel - or a lot of it - isn't everyone's cup of tea. Railtours Ireland are an excellent outfit who use a combination of the scheduled train services and have coaches at the end station to bring you to their chosen sites. They do multi-day tours as well as day trips. They would be my choice of holiday as I love to travel by train!

So if you get my drift, its hard for us to say which is the "best".

Anyway, there's 3 varieties to mull over - check out their websites and if you need any more info, come back and ask - we'll help if we can.

www.railtoursireland.com is good - they do day trips out of Dublin, using comfy civilised trains rather than motorway buses for the long haul out of Dublin, then a coach for the country bit.

I am an older female and planning to travel to Ireland alone in 2014. I have recently retired and have always wanted to see the Emerald Isle. I'm really not nervous about being alone per se but I've never traveled abroad before. What should I be getting together or doing in preparation of my trip now?

First of all, welcome to Trip Advisor!

You may want to post your question as a new topic so you get direct answers to you instead of adding on to another's topic (helps keep things a bit clearer for all when responding).

A great place to start is on the right hand side of the screen, Top Questions about Ireland - especially the "How Do I Start to Plan my Trip to Ireland". After that, please be a frequent visitor here to TA and you will receive some wonderful guidance as you plan your trip!

We really enjoyed Railtours Ireland. They operate trips by rail all over the island. You travel by rail, and then by bus guided by a local guide. You can book these individually out of Dublin. Or link them along the rim of the island, joining a different day tour each day, and staying in different cities. We loved it. We did the six day, and the only thing we found was that we should have taken a spare day in Killarney, or Galway, as we were

Tired, (read old). This is not the tour to take if you want to mesh with fellow traveller s, as the faces change daily. The Irish actually like Americans. we especially loved the tour of Innismore, and of course the Cliffs of 'Moher. the bus always takes Rest stops, and some are delightful pubs, but a few more than we prefer Wes gift shops. But we did appreciate the stops.

You might want to check out Wolfhound Adventure Tours (www.wolfhoundtours.com). If you are interested in getting a little bit off the beaten path and learning a lot about Irish history and legends in a small group atmosphere - it may fit the bill. The maximum group size is 12 -13 so I would think it would be great for someone traveling alone. It does include some biking and hiking which are optional, but if you are not interested in doing any outdoor activities like that it would probably be best to look elsewhere. We just got back from the Southwest tour (6 days) and it was fantastic. We had people ranging in age from mid 20s to early 60s. We spent a couple of days in Dublin before the tour which was allowed us to get over the jet lag and see a few sites there. Check out the rave reviews on TripAdvisor - they are all true. It is impressive that so many people go back for repeat tours.
