Good place to center touring county Donegal

Does it make sense to stay in Donegal town to tour the area, or should we base somewhere farther north, or split our stay? We have 3 nights and are coming from Sligo, so have most of that day as well.Thanks.

I would recommend going a bit further north than Donegal town but it depends on what you would like to see. We go to Downings on the Rosguill peninsula twice a year and we just love it there. We rent a house but you could have a look at http://www.beachhotel.ie/ (the food is very nice). This corner of Donegal will take you a bit off the usual path. There are lovely places to see: Bloody Foreland, Mount Errigal, the Fanad peninsula, the Atlantic Drive around Rosguill (spectacular!), Glenveagh National Park, Doe Castle, Lough Salt, Cruit Island... And there are plenty of beaches, too.

Coming from Sligo going where?? Letterkenny is a good central option but is a working town rather than a tourist town. Never been a problem for us but some folk prefer a tourist focus. For Donegal town we stay a little north of town at Drumcorry (Farm) guest house.

From Donegal town most places can be easily reached for day tours including Slieve League cliffs, Ulster American Folk Park (nr Omagh) and even Derry city. Some people however prefer the more coastal regions where Fanad or Downings is popular however the access roads here are not so great and will lead you through narrow twists and turns and over mountains. You might consider Ardara which is a small town and central to much of the above.

Cavan, some twists (we know the road!) but NO mountains! A few slight inclines. The road from Letterkenny to Creeslough is very good.

Thanks. We are going from Sligo into Donegal, wherever we decide to center. Thinking now of going to ardara...via slieve league for the first night, then along the coast to stay in Ramelton, seeing Fanad etc before a last night in Donegal town.

Does this make sense?

I didn't want to change B and B s each night, but it seemed to make sense. Open to suggestions!

With your plans changing B&B 's will make sense. Donegal is a large county...

Ramelton is a lovely little town.

When on Fanad make sure to drive all the way down to the lighthouse (signposted "Fanad Drive"). The views from there are just gorgeous. And the drive along the eastern side of the Fanad peninsula via Port Salon is really beautiful with views over to Inishowen.

I just hope you'll have good weather!

Clauds - We beg to differ that you may know 'a' road from Letterkenny to Downings, but it is not 'the' road which we take via Creeslough and Cashel which is both scenic and over a mountain. We even have some mountain heather in our garden to prove it.
