weather in Ireland beginning of December?

Hello. We're thinking about booking a trip for a few weeks to Ireland the first 2 weeks of December. Can anyone tell me what the average weather has been in Ireland the last few Decembers? I understand it rarely snows in December, just wondering if the rainfall would be heavier than other times of the year. Also, does Dublin have Christmas Markets? Thank you.

Days will be very short, it could be dark by 4.30 pm. Snow has and does happen in December, as do icy roads ,fog rain and cold weather. It's not a time I'd choose to explore Ireland if I could help it.

Quite the mixed bag in recent years.

December 2012:

Yes, Dublin does have Christmas Markets is the short answer.

From 2012:

Keep an eye out here for Christmas 2013:

The market mentioned for Dun Laoghaire is in south Co Dublin and easily accessed by DART and by bus from Dublin city centre, for example.

The 3 weeks snow in December 2010 was very unusual, it might be 50 years before this happens again. It does rain more in the West in Winter, but this usually precludes cold, so no ice. Dry weather would probably mean frost at night. Irish weather changes so a rigid plan is not ideal. The one thing you cannot change is the length of the day, the opposite of current conditions in June.

Thanks for the answers. We're changing our plans to see Ireland now in July or August 2014. Over a year away, but will be a better time.

If it's possible to do so, choose the second half of August. July and the first half of August are generally busier than the second half of August.

You will avoid the August Bank Holiday - a long weekend at the beginning of August, when many locals take their holidays as well.

Lots of festivals and other events organized around that weekend, which adds to the general busy ness of roads, accommodation and so on.

In the second half of August, schools are getting ready to re-open for the new school year. If history and/or heritage are of interest, you could partake in Heritage Week, the dates of which vary a little each year.

This year, it runs from Saturday 17th August to Sunday 25th August. Events take place country wide and most events are free:

If you want to catch a Gaelic Football or Hurling game, the All Ireland Championship is reaching the semi-final stages, which are played in Croke Park in Dublin.

Even if you don't want to attend, there's lots of color and atmosphere around the city and country, in anticipation of the finals.
