Itinerary for mid-late April 2014

Hello!

I have a trip I'm planning with my father for his 70th. It's just the two of us (I'm the daughter) and it'll probably be the only time we get to visit Ireland.

I'm looking at the following:

Days 1&2 - Dublin

Days 3-5 - Valley of the Boyne/Bru na Boinne/fishing (stay in Trim)

Days 6-7 - Midlands/Clonmacnoise/Kilbeggan Distillery (stay in Tullamore)

Days 8-10 - Galway/Aran Islands/The Burren or Connemara (stay in Galway)

We might get a Day 11 (fingers crossed!) and if we can I'll probably use it in Galway.

Couple of specific questions. Is Tullamore the best place to stay in Cty. Offaly? And after landing in Dublin should we stay the night there in the city or head straight to Trim then bus it back to the city for visiting/sight-seeing the first two days?

We'll be renting a car. Our interests lie in historical relevance (Dad was a History teacher) and the outdoors (hiking/walking in particular). Budget-wise we're right in the middle.

I welcome any and all tweaks to this itinerary. I've been reading some of the posts and threads and you guys are Awesome!

Thanks for all your generous advice!!!

Looks fine to me. I presume you will be hiring a car? Tullamore is not a tourist town, but is a good centre to stay in.

If you go to Connemara, I would recommend that you stay a night in Clifden. Galway is really a long way to drive. Clifden is a nice town with good food and music. I would recommend Buttermilk Lodge to stay in, and Mitchell's Seafood Restaurant for dinner. Music at J. Conneely's Pub. You could go to Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park and Aasleigh Falls near by. The Dingle Peninsula is a must.

as a senior I can say galway wouldn't be my choice....too crowded with college kids, driving difficult, and parking costly unless you have accommodations, within walking distance of city centre, that would provide parking.....if you want to visit Connemara, which is gorgeous, why not stay somewhere outside of galway like clifden, oughterard, roundstone, etc......as for trim first then back to Dublin, another really crowded city, i'd say do Dublin first and then pick up your car for the rest of the trip.....

where do you fly out of?....

This sounds like a great idea. And I guess I'm hearing that Galway might be a little crowded/expensive for a base of operations all things Westside? How difficult would it be to stay in Clifden then day trip to Galway? I also really agree about DIngle Pen. - just not sure we'll have time. Maybe if we get that extra day...

Trim is about an hour from Dublin and you could commute. Leave the car at somewhere like Navan Rd Parkway station and come into the city on the train. Check timetables at www.irishrail.ie

The Bridge Hotel is right in the middle of Tullamore which is a compact town - not touristy.

Birr Castle is not too far away either. http://www.birrcastle.com/

ps - check your dates against Easter. Most places will be closed on Good Friday [incl pubs]

Thanks for the tips! (I hadn't remembered about Easter.)

I really like the idea of Birr Castle as well. I'll look into that some more...

I think we will just hub in Trim for our Dublin visit. That's two extra days that we don't really need the car, true, but we'd probably spend that extra money on accommodations from what I understand.

Great feedback from everyone!! Thanks so much!

8. Re: Itinerary for mid-late April 2014

New question!

I've tweaked the itinerary a bit and now have us finishing a 12-day trip with two days/three nights in Dublin.

Any suggestions/ preferences between Howth or Malahide as a place to stay at night while exploring the city centre by day? (I'd like to lose the car for these last days as well so adequate public transport is preferred.)

Or should we "bite the bullet", so to speak, and pay the higher prices and stay in the city at someplace a bit more utilitarian.

Thanks for your continued help!

you might consider swords...it's about a mile north of the airport and has great bus service into city center...

For Connemara -

Buttermilk Lodge, Mitchelles would not be on my list for Clifden, I like to be in town and get decent food for a decent price with decent service.. Dun Ri is a great guesthouse on the eastern edge of town, for upmarket lodgings then Quay House on the western side is "boutique"? Off The Square is best overall posh nosh with many bars serving excellent food and the chipper next to Connellys would get my vote over the blue painted "foodie badge" place over the road.

not sure why or how Dingle got a mention but apart from Beehive huts the Connemara offers all and more than you would get from there.
