Galway or Cork or Killarney????

We have 5 college kids going to Ireland in september, 4 girls and 1 boy. (we're all studying architecture but intend on having fun too). We plan on spending the bulk of our time in Dublin. But we were also planning on seeing Galway, Cork, and Killarney. We can spend one night in two of these cities and two nights in the remaining city. Which city would be the most worthy of spending 2 nights in????

Galway!!

I was there last week. It is the equivelant of Ireland's San Fran. It is very artsy and laid back, and would be agreat place for college kids. I like Cork and Killarney, but not as much as Galway. Killarney was surpringly small, and a bit touristy. There is a thriving party scene on the weekend, but other than that, I think Galway would be a clear winner.

After visiting both Dublin and Galway, I would compare them very much like NY and SF. The next time I go I'll spend more time in Galway.

i grew up in winchester, and wading through the crowd in Killarney in April reminded me of Apple Blossom Festival (and not in a good way...)It's likely to be the same in the fall. Lots of beautiful area near there, however, Dingle peninsula especially, but not easy to get to without a car. Cork is a nice city, and a good train ride from Dublin, but Galway would be my clear choice to spend as much time there as you possibly can. It's a great city -- very accessible, with lots of good B&Bs and hostels in the general area of the city centre. It is at once vibrant and laid back...there's lots of good food, drink, music, theatre and art to be had, and the scenery along the Bay is tremendous. Our experiences in Dublin this year have left us with the feeling that it's now a large, European city, with interesting things to see and an extremely active night life, but not distinctly Irish anymore (which makes sense, given its economic resurgance since my last extended time there, 20 years earlier...) It also appears to be the destination of virtually every hen and stag party west of London!! Based on what "bulk" means, and what other kinds of restrictions you may have on your time (are you on a study abroad-type trip, or doing your own thing?), spending more time outside of the "big city" might be worth a thought!

wow you grew up in winchester? that's pretty crazy. what a small world. The Ireland portion of my trip is the initial independent traveling that i'll be doing with a few friends before meeting up with a larger group from virginia tech in London. The scheduled itinerary that is actually part of our semester's curriculm is for 10 weeks all over europe. I know we will be seeing every major attraction and architectural attractions that we possibly can within those 10 weeks. We chose to see Ireland first, not so much for the architecture but more just to see ireland. We are just trying to narrow it down to a couple places that have plenty to see but we also plan on taking our time and having fun too before our intense traveling. So far, it sounds like Galway is the most recommended. Thanks for your advice.

p.s.- I always thought it was near impossible to describe the Apple Blossom festival to anyone who has never been to it before. That gives me a pretty good idea of what you were talking about as far as Killarney.

Galway is a great city, very lively but easy going as well.

Killarney is very tourist orientated and commercialised.

Cork is a nice enough city, but nothing compares to Galway, especially for students. You will love it.
