Trip Planning - Apr 23 to May 3, opinions please

Hi! I am in the planning phase for a trip to Ireland, flying in and out of Dublin. We have not yet purchased air, so the dates may be adjusted a day or two. This will be my 3rd trip and my friend's first. My first two trips were fabulous, but both rushed from town to town. I have done my background research (shout out 'Thanks!' to Sarnia G's reports/advice), but wanted to see what adjustments could be made. The tentative plan for this go around will be:

Weds - Travel

Thurs - Arrive Dub early morning, drive to Kilkenny, stay in Kilkenny

Fri - early depart to Cashel, on through to Dingle, stay in Dingle two nights (Greenmount House)

Sat - Dingle

Sun - drive to Ballyvaughan, stay in Ballyvaughan to explore Burren two nights (Ballyvaughan Lodge)

Mon - Ballyvaughn

Tues - drive to Galway, stay in Galway

Weds - current plan to stay in Galway 2nd night - should we head towards Westport/Clifden for a two night stay in Connemara?

Thurs - current plan to drive to Westport/Clifden for one night stay

Fri - drive towards Dublin for last night, stay in Malahide.

Sat - Travel

Planning to rent car from easytourireland or dan dooley, currently easytour has best rates for our timeframe, and planning to stay in B&Bs (not booked yet), most nights except last night, leaning toward Grand Hotel in Malahide.

Any suggestions or opinions welcome! Thanks! ac

Bryno Approved. (I would rather spend the time as you said in Westport or Clifden) Westport is in County Mayo BTW and is well worth visiting.

Unless there is something specific that you want to stay in Galway city for two nights, I think I would spend one night in each of Galway, Clifden and Westport. That would give you a more leisurely drive from Galway to Clifden to Westport, allowing you plenty of time to delay at any particular sights or places that take your fancy. Here is a suggested route from Galway to Westport via Clifden, although I appreciate you may already have one in mind yourself - http://goo.gl/maps/lGuF9

From Galway city, tgo hrough Salthill, to Spiddal (R336). Continue on the R336 until you come to Screeb Cross, where you turn left onto the R340 in the direction of Carna. About 8/9 miles after Carna, you can turn left onto the R342 in the direction of Cashel and onwards to Roundstone on the R341.

Alternatively, instead of turning left onto the R242, continue on the R340, until you come to the main Galway/Clifden road (N59). Turn left, in the direction of Clifden, and after a short distance, turn left again, onto the R341, for Roundstone. From Roundstone, continue along the R341 to Ballyconneely and then on to Clifden.

Close to Clifden is the Connemara National Park (on the N59, in the direction of Leenane and Westport. If you are into walking, you should visit this park, and you could also climb Diamond Mountain, when you are there - if time permits. Further along the N59, is Kylemore Abbey. As you continue along the N59 after Kylemore Abbey, towards Leenane, there are magnificent views of Killary Harbour. From Leenane, drive along the R335 to Delphi and Louisburgh and in to Westport passing by Croagh Patrick - which you might be tempted to climb!! Just outside Clifden, there is a most beautiful short drive - the Sky Road (Google Map link:- http://g.co/maps/cxpz6 ), which on a clear day is just fantastic, and well worth doing. The roads are narrow, but don‘t let that put you off.

Malahide is a good option for your last night, as it is only 20 minutes from the airport.

Aah : thank you for your kind words Angela C - so pleased to learn you've found my posts helpful :-)

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time - such lovely places you're visiting! If you haven't found a b&b for Kilkenny, have a look at Lawcus Farm, which lies a few miles south of the city. It has an idyllic setting in peaceful countryside, and the owners Mark and Ann-Marie are so welcoming and delightful company:

If you want a city location, then have a look at these two, which have received good reviews in recent trip reports:

Must confess that although I enjoy driving up to Galway for shopping/cinema, I've never stayed in the city. I think your choice for those 3 nights after Ballyvaughan will depend on whether you prefer 1-2 nights in a city (small city) or whether you prefer rural locations?

:-)

Dun Ri would be a good option in Clifden but seems to get booked up these days for some reason??

http://goo.gl/maps/L5ihu & …activeboard.com/t50055177/n59-galway-route/ might have some points for that leg.. with SG's go list tripadvisor.ie/GoListDetail-i19855-Burren_Hi… or www.dochara.com/tour/itineraries/burren-tour/

Thank you Sarnia G, tony2phones and oma14! We really appreciate your responses.

I found out on Friday that a co-workers' in-laws live outside of Clifden, and she provided additional insight from their annual holidays. I think we will now spend two days in Clifden, relaxing for the last couple of days of the holiday. She mentioned that they like to stay at Station House, but I think the personal touch of Dun Ri (first choice...or the Quay or Sea Mist) is what we will try for.

Thanks again! Once we get our dates set, I may have additional questions if my first and second choices don't work out :)

(Sorry for the duplicate post...I had an old profile that I couldn't get reset)
