A one day trip from Dublin

I will be in Dublin for 3 1/2 day, in March. We would like to get out of the city on one day. Kilkenny was suggested as a good place to see. Are there any other interesting, historical cities like Kilkenny, that someone can suggest. Does it pay to take a tour from Dublin (9 1/12 hours) that includes a stop in Kilkenny and several other places. My first inclination is just to get to Kilkenny and spend time there. That bringsup the next question - what is the best way to get there.

You can get the train to Kilkenny. it is quite a small city and the main sites are easily walked.
