Best town from which to tour counties Clare and Galway?

Have previously visited Kerry and Cork. On next visit want to explore Clare and Galway. Please recommend scenic mid-size town/city we could stay in for a week and do day trips in these two counties. Thanks!

Galway and Ennis jump immediately to mind, though there are quite a number of other options that might suit such as Clifden, Lahinch, Lisdoonvarna, Oughterard. Have you specific requirements and when you say scenic, what do you hope for?

It depends what you mean by Clare and Galway,, There is a Lot more to Clare than the Cliffs and Burren Eco Park and for the whole County Ennis would be the best base..

Galway as a base for Galway makes sense but again depends on which part of Galway which in tourist terms tend to include Mayo as well.

For both areas Clare and Galway combined then somewhere within easy reach (1/2 hour) of Galway makes best practical sense I would have thought.

Thank you both for quick, informative responses. By scenic I would love a coastal town, but I realize that might not be the best choice. I'd like any town with a river, park/garden, attractive buildings, good shops, casual restaurants, great pubs, etc.

Oughterard leans towards Connemara or Kinvara just about on the Galway border with Clare on the coast just south of the city.

Galway itself would fit the bill.

I agree with lordkimmage and I think that Galway fulfils all your requirements.

Day trips to The Burren and Cliffs of Moher in Clare are quite doable from Galway as is Connemara.

There are some beautiful coastal towns in both counties, but I don't think any of them would fit all the requirements you listed.
