Help with Ireland itinery

Coming from Oz. Have a week in Ireland with flight booked into Shannon on 7 May. That's it although only have 7 - 10 days and thinking fly out of Dublin but option is still open to depart elsewhere. Doing self drive as 50+ couple with elderly mother along also but not wanting to miss any fun stuff. Can tuck mum away and head out for the night if necessary.

Thinking (with no logical reasoning other than viewing map) 2nights Shannon, 1 night Kenmore, 1 night Cork, 2 nights Waterford, 1 night Dublin. All have been to Dublin before so not wanting to see a lot there.

No real knowledge of Ireland so any ideas of 'must see' really appreciated.

Pam.

I can see that you dont want to drive far on the first night, that is commendable, so many people think they can come off a long haul and do a five hour drive, but one night in Shannon is enough, do two in Kenmare instead, its a lovely area.

Not much in Shannon apart from the Airports, industrial estates and housing (sorry Shannon) so depending on your aims from there possibly rethink just where for those days,, Kenmare/Killarney area might be more deserving of 2 nights than Waterford.

Have a look at a couple of guide books to decide what "you" want to see and do something must have put Ireland into the plan?

Sorry Shannon (again) but absolutely no point in staying there. Limerick is about thirty minutes away so if Kenmare is a destination then spend first night in Limerick. En route you will pass close to Bunratty Castle (limerick.ie/visiting/…) so depending on time of day you could call there. Depending on your interests you could do worse than King John's Castle (http://www.limerick.ie/kingjohnscastle/) a restored 13 Century building recently refurbished. If rugby is of interest then the famous Thomond Park (www.thomondpark.ie), home of Munster Rugby is also worth seeing.

OK, thanks. Shannon is off the list of overnight stays. Thinking now is to arrive Shannon am with first night (or 2) Doolin, second night Limerick and two nights Kenmare. A night in maybe Cork, Waterford or Kilkenny and then on to Dublin.

Think that Connemara might be too out of the way for the time and direction we have.
