suggestions for free time in Killarney

We're doing the LEISURELY IRELAND tour with CIE next month, and will have one day with some free time and dinner on our own.

Any suggestions for a place to try, something within walking distance of Malton Hotel would be a preference if such exists. Or short taxi ride if we are extra tired that day or if nothing within easy walk is good.

Thanks.

I don't know what you're visiting as part of your tour, but in Killarney, we liked Ross Castle, Muckross House, Torc Waterfall, Gap of Dunloe.

Killarney is great for "us tourists" to walk..buskers heard throughout the town. Some venues (ie Scruffy's) now have "rock" version of celtic music which the locals seem to enjoy....but small pubs can be found with trad music. Take a jaunty cart ride through the KNP; yup..it's touristy, but can be very entertaining. Visit Mockross House and/or Ross Castle.;boat tour on the lake. walk over to the cathedral..a magnificent sight. Visitor's center near hotel for more information.

Muckross House and Gardens and nearby Muckross Abbey are well worth a visit as is Torc Waterfall.

In terms of food, we like Macs of Main Street www.macsofmainstreet.com They have lovely ice cream.

Across the road is Murphys Ice Cream (you can share the love and eat Mac's food and Murphy's Ice Cream if you wish!!) and also the lovely esoteric Killarney Bookshop.

What might work for you is to take a taxi out to Muckross House. Walk the gardens and see the house then have lunch in the restaurant. Then you could walk to Torc Waterfall (one direction) and Muckross Abbey (the other direction) or even take a jaunting car to either. This would easily take up a good part of your day.

Dinner primarily, we're visiting all or most of those other sites on the tour. We have 3 nights at CC Hotel in Killarney on our tour, we already have dinner included one night at the hotel, one night at Killarney House for dinner, and this one other for dinner on our own.

Can I walk easily from Malton Hotel into the town, and any suggestions for a nice informal pub kind of place for a bit of dinner?

For pub food I like Murphy's Bar.

The Malton is about 5-7 minutes walk from the town centre.
