Dublin to Shannon in 7 days

Hi All,

We are travelling to Ireland for the first time in August (4 adults) flying into Dublin and flying out of Shannon. We'd like to see Dublin, Galway and the Dingle Peninsula. We will be renting a car. Does anyone have any itinerary suggestions? Thanks in advance for your kindness.

You could :

Days 1-2 : Dublin

Spend a couple of days exploring the city, or a day in the city, and a day-trip to either Glendalough or Newgrange:

Day 3 : collect rental car, drive across to Galway, possibly stopping at Clonmacnoise en-route if it interests you. It's clearly signed from the motorway, just before you reach Athlone:

Day 4 : take a trip out to Connemara, which lies north(ish) of Galway, for fabulous scenery:

Day 5 : head down to Dingle for 2 nights, which will give you approx. 1.5 days on the Peninsula; there's alot to discover and enjoy, particularly if you like walking, and other outdoor activities like surfing, kayaking, boat trips, horse riding, as well as shopping, dining, historic sites:

Day 7 : head back towards Shannon. You could drive to the ferry at Tarbert (Dingle-Tralee-Listowel-Tarbert) and visit Loop Head before continuing to Ennis, which makes a convenient stop for your last night:

Or, take the ferry and head farther north to the Cliffs of Moher (approx 3.5hrs from Dingle) if you wish to see them, before heading to Ennis. Alternatively, the Oakwood Arms hotel is a lovely hotel in Shannon, only 5-minute drive from the airport:

August is a busy time, so recommend you book accommodation asap! I tend to research reviews here on Tripadvisor, then book direct.

Yes, 7 full days. We have not booked hotels yet. We would like a variety of places to stay, hotels, B&B's and castles, our budget is moderate. We thought maybe 2 nights in Dublin and were trying to figure where to next, as we are planning Cliff's of Mohrer, Aran Islands, Galway Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula area. And flying out of Shannon. So really just trying to see what makes the most sense geographically. We love the advice here and have booked our London part of the trip from great recommendations on here and have never gone wrong with the advice.

A few questions, what do you like to do? Outdoors, cultural, historic sites, pubs, traditional music, foodies, people watch?

A "moderate" budget will not allow many of the so-called castle hotels (I rant on this regularly-most places are NOT castles)If you will be in the area and really want a "castle" Ballyseedy outside Tralee would be better value for money than other other-hyped and over -expensive places.

We are looking to do all of the above, hiking, cultural, historic pubs and music. Thanks for the info on the castles, we were sure how authentic they were. We were looking at the one in Bunratty though.

My husband and I are planning a very similar trip in early Oct for 8 full days, so I'm interested in learning from this thread, too. Our interests are also similar: outdoor activities, food/drink, music and beautiful landscapes. A nice round of golf would be a plus, too. Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

You could visit one of the Aran Islands whilst based in Galway; it's a full day excursion, and you can either take ferry or plane

These two hotels have good reviews:

Not sure you'll have time for Dingle "and" Ring of Kerry without rushing around one or other of the Peninsulas. Might be best to choose one or the other and spend adequate time seeing it - OR - spend just 1 night in Dublin, freeing up a further night for Kerry.

As far as I know, Bunratty Castle hotel is named after Bunratty Castle, and has no "castle" origins - I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!! I'm with Harvey re castle hotels; many of them bear no resemblance to castles these days, as they have been modified down the ages. Most of them are more "country manor house" style properties.

Eta: Dingle - have a look at these properties, all of which are popular with folk here on Tripadvisor:

I'm staying here again at the end of August for 4 nights:

We will post our full itinerary soon, it is shaping up. It looks like we can do all we want, it may be a face pace but that's ok. And I will post how it went after we return. Thank you one and all for your input.
