Flying into Ireland and ferry to England

Hi - I'm considering planning a trip flying into Shannon or Dublin and spending a few days and from there renting a car and taking a ferry to England and thence traveling through Wales/lake district and maybe Scotland. What are the downsides to doing this? If I never fly into Heathrow again it will be too soon. :)

thanks in advance!

You will find it either impossible or very expensive to take a hire car out of Ireland into the UK (and that is not taking account of the actual cost of taking the car on the ferry).

Hire a car in Ireland but return it here and hire another car in the UK.

There are lots of airports other than Heathrow you can fly into from Dublin, check out the Aer Lingus and Ryanair websites.

maybe fly into Liverpool or Manchester, or somewhere near where you want to be in England. You can rent a car there and you wont be anywhere near Heathrow

If not driving, LHR would be my point of entry.

Seems a faiiry complicated way of avoiding Heathrow. You cant take a hire car on the ferry, even if you could find a company willing to let you do this it is very expensive. And the ferry from Dublin goes to Wales not England.
