Is Glandore a good home base?

I am traveling to Ireland with my husband and 4 & 5 year old from Canada in october for 2 1/2 weeks. I am looking at a self catering cottage in Glandore to stay at for our first week. Is this a good central location to see the sights? Some castles for the boys are a must! Thanks

I wouldn't recommend Glandore as a base in October. It is a tiny but beautiful

place for sailing enthusiasts in the Summer with one hotel and two nice pubs

and that's about it. If you want to stay in that immediate area would suggest

Rosscarbery....there is one large hotel The Celtic Ross and the village square

with Cathedral etc. is very pretty. Clonakilty is a lovely town and there would

be more going on there at that time of the year. However, without knowing

all you plans, my suggestion would be to base yourself in either Killarney

or Kenmare and from there you can do the Ring of Kerry (or just half of it

by cutting down the centre of the peninsula...a most beautiful road but virtually no houses on it....you cut down into Waterville. Valentia Island is

well worth a trip ... very scenic. You could do the Dingle Peninsula to include Slea Head and the Bere Peninsula going the other direction from

Killarney. Sheep's Head from Bantry! etc. So much choice ..... research and

see what suits you best. Schools reopen in September and places will be

a lot quieter... by October reckon you need to be staying where places will

remain open (especially with the recession).

Hope you have a very pleasant trip

Thanks for the reply! Glad I asked. We are flying into Dublin on the 6th and were going to stay at a B&B or hotel somewhere in between dublin and cork for a few days , were planning on Glandore for a week (not anymore) , a night near or in the Dingle Penninsula (recommended over Ring of Kerry) and then to Doolin for a week. (already booked) We were wanting to take the kids to Foto Wildpark in Cork, whale/dolphin/seal watching somewhere(still investigating) and nothing else is carved in stone. I am not stuck on Glandore, we had found a nice self catering cottage their but I am sure with a bit more searching I will find another one! I will check out your previous suggestions. Do you have any other suggestions with a bit better idea of our plans?

I think I would second Kenmare, Killarney or Clonakilty area for this part of your holiday - more access to other beautiful sites in Cork and Kerry, and more chance of places being open.. There are plenty of holiday rentals advertised on TA around these locations. Also think about whether you want to be in a rural location or within walking distance of pubs, restaurants etc -

You will be visiting some lovely places - without so many tour buses on the roads - have a great time!

I had a quick look at the rentals in the area on tripadvisor and they look gorgeous. Even better, you get the benefit of reviews from verified travellers who have stayed in the properties.
