A picnic for 2 - Sherkin Island?

Hi,

I am staying in Skibbereen for 2 nights in July and would like to plan a very quiet picnic for 2 - I think Sherkin Island looks ideal.

1. Would you agree with my choice? There must be endless choices in that part of the world.

2. If you've been to Sherkin Island - I can't work out if theres a path to Tra Ban beach or if its a case of walking across fields which might not be ideal. Any idea where I might find a half decent hiking trail map?

Thanks for your help.

Sherkin sounds perfect for what you want.

Sherkin has a paved road network, although it's generally very quiet. and you'd be unlucky to be passed by more than a couple of vehicles in the 30 minute walk to the area where the beaches are.

I've been to Sherkin a number of times, but have to admit that I've never gone down to Trá Bán. It is only 20m off the main road, so all but the last bit should be OK. I can't imagine that there's not a path down to it.

There are a couple of other beaches on Sherkin (Silver Strand and Cow Strand), which are both usually very quiet. Only during the regatta, which brings extra people to the island, or on the hottest summer days are there more than a handful of people on them.

The main alternative would be Heir Island, which is a smaller island with beaches, but the ferried are a lot less frequent. Clear Island is a special place, but is busier and doesn't have beaches.

Be aware that beaches up and down the west coast were badly damages in the February storms. I haven't heard about damage at Sherkin, so hopefully everything is OK there.
