Irish Open - set for Fota Island, Cork 19th to 22nd June

Ok, the 'open' is confirmed for Cork see here for a few further details irishexaminer.com/ireland/tour-to-confirm-ir…

Some facts about the Fota Island Resort Golf Club for intending spectators:

Where is the course?

The course is located at the lovely Fota Island Resort Hotel (originally a Sheraton property) It is 9 miles from Cork City, 6.5 miles from Midleton, 5.5 miles from Cobh and 4 miles from Little Island.

Is there public transport to Fota Island Resort?

No , there is not. The only public transport that passes anywhere near the resort is the Cork to Cobh train, but this is really not an option, as the station is too far from the resort. There is currently no bus service on that route.

Is there parking at the resort for Spectators?

Plenty of overflow parking will be available on site, as it was in 2002. Whether there will be a charge for parking remains to be seen. It was free in 2002.

What hotel accommodation is an option nearby?

Cobh (Commodore Hotel and the Watersedge Hotel, and a number of guesthouses). Midleton (Midleton Park Hotel, and a number of guesthouses), LIttle Island (Radisson hotel), Carrigtwohill (a number of guesthouses), The Fota Island Resort hotel will more than likely be open to spectators also. Cork City and surrounds (numerous hotels and guesthouses). Hotels at Rochestown, Carrigaline and Glanmire will also be good locations for spectators.

Eating and drinking during the competition?

Fota Island Resort is right off the beaten track. Food and drink for spectators will be provided by the Hotel and by temporary concession stands on site.

If you are thinking of coming along in June, and have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

The last time The Irish Open was at Fota, they opened a special path from Fota Train station to the resort. This avoided the need to walk out to the main road and reduced the walk time to 15-20 mins. Sadly it wasn't retained once the tournament was over. We'll have to see if it happens again.

Unfortunately, it leads out on part of the course that is nowhere near the clubhouse, which is where all the facilities were located.

We live 5 mins from Fota and we were considering renting out our four bed detached house out for the event, does anyone know if there would be a demand for this and if so who should we approach to advertise this? .

It looks from that like they will be opening up an entrance by the 4th hole for people using the train station. This makes it a much more practical option. This entrance is also useful to anyone visiting Fota Wildlife Park or Fota House on the same day as it means they will be able to walk down from either of them to the golf much more quickly.
