Tulla to Donegal

My husband, myself and another couple want to visit Ireland next April-May. We will have 14 days. I would like to fly into Shannon and then travel to a B&B outside of Tulla where we will stay for three days. From there we would like to travel to Donegal for another 3 day stay and make our way back down the coast to Shannon for our departure. Is there a recommended place to stay in Donegal? Is this to ambitious for a single day? Suggested places to stop to break up the day?

Well, we drove from Feakle, which is near Tulla, to the west coast of Donegal in 1 day - and it was a loooong day: over 6hrs in the car, mostly on single-lane roads (1 lane each direction). So yes, it is doable, but it might be worth staying 4 nights in Donegal, so you get 3 full days in the county, if you're driving that far.

We stopped for a break just before Sligo town at Carrowmore megalithic cemetery: largest of its kind in Europe, I believe:

heritageireland.ie/en/…

Just after Sligo, you pass by Drumcliffe where W B Yeats is buried, in the shadow of Benbulben:

You could stop in Sligo for a night . . . .

We rented a house on the west coast for a week, in the area known as the Rosses, which is where the small airport is located. I think if I were going to stay just a few days, I'd look for somewhere in/near Dunfanaghy on the north coast, or Millford and Rathmelton.

Might even consider 1 night on the way up in/near Donegal town, in order to head west the following morning to Slieve League Cliffs and Glencolumbkille, followed by 2-3 nights in the afore-mentioned places.

Inishowen Peninsula: worth a day's exploration:

a day on Tory Island:

and we loved the scenery in/around Dunfanaghy and Horn Head:

You could then head back down via Westport and Connemara/Galway to west Clare. This itinerary will give you some ideas for what to see/do in Westport and co. Galway:

I always follow up by reading reviews here on Tripadvisor before enquiring direct with the establishment.

For breaking your journey you could consider the Sligo coast - the beaches are beautiful there.

I can recommend Burtonport as a destination in Donegal; it is a quiet seaside town near Arranmore, Inishfree and Rutland island:

(don't let this site put you off! It is lovely, honest!)

We spent one day driving the coast road out of Donegal thru the beautiful town of Killybegs. The highlight of our drive was Slieve League, which rivals the Cliffs of Moher without all of the tourists. We then drove on to Glencolumbkille, stopping at the Folk Village and continuing along the coastline. We then backtracked thru Glencolumbkille through the Glengnesh Pass toward Ardara, returning to walk Donegal.

Another close by stop is the Belleek factory, which my wife loved.

Thanks so much for all of the information. I definitely have a lot to consider but I like the idea of spending 3 full days in Donegal.

Slieve League was big on my wish list of places to see. I will have to check out the Belleek Factory. Thanks for taking the time to give me your thoughts.

If you do Slieve League, watch carefully for the signs or you will miss the turnoff. When you get to the lower parking lot, open the gate and drive thru to the upper parking lot. Be sure to close the gate. It is a long walk from the lower lot and the road to the top has been greatly improved. What a fabulous site without all of the tourists. There is even a little stand at the top serving ice cream, tea, etc.

My suggestion for a base in Donegal is Ardara which has just been awarded "Best Village in which to live in Ireland" by the Irish Times. It's a lovely little place, buzzing at all times of night and day and is well placed for visiting Glencolumbcille, Slieve League, Glengesh and all the best bits of the county.
