I'd say it depends a lot on how much you like driving! I definitely didn't mind it so we had two days in Donegal. We spent the first morning in Donegal Town and drove to Glencolumbkille that afternoon (tried to see the cliffs, but it was too foggy), returning to Donegal Town. The next morning we were supposed to go straight to Glenveagh, then on to Londonderry for the night, but we decided to go back to try to see the cliffs (no such luck). We ended up taking the scenic route to Glenveagh through Ardara and Gweedore. I really didn't mind the extra driving because the misty countryside was so beautiful!

One possible option would be to go to Glenveagh on Saturday (you'd have a few hours there in the afternoon) and stay somewhere north. Then on Sunday you could head towards the Slieve League cliffs and Glencolumbkille, overnighting there. On Monday morning you could pass through Donegal Town, stopping at the castle on your way to Athlone. This would be a lot of driving, but scenic and not very crowded roads at all.

Otherwise, you could base out of Donegal Town instead and do mainly the southern part of the County, taking more time at each place.
