best way to get from Dublin to Orkney Islands in Scotland

Any suggestions for how we can get from Dublin to the Orkney Islands in June, 2009? I am unaware of the most scenic route. If we want to take the ferry, is it possible to embark from Dublin? If not, where can we embark on a ferry that would take us to Orkney Island?

How far is it from Dublin to Kerry? What is the easiest way to get to Kerry from Dublin? Train, car, or ferry?

Thanks for your suggestions!

With respect, you need to get a map of Ireland/UK and check out the locations of the places you want to visit, as it would save long explanations. However, and in summary:

1. Orkneys are in Scotland not in Ireland and are not directly accessible from any Irish port. You need to check out the Scotland, United Kingdom Forum on TA for information on the Orkneys.

2.If you are travelling from Ireland to Scotland to get to the Orkneys, you can fly from various Irish airports to a number of locations in Scotland.

3. You can also travel by car ferry from Belfast or nearby Larne in Northern Ireland to a number of ports in Scotland including Stranraer and Cairnryan.

4. Alternatively, you can travel by car ferry from Dublin or nearby Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead in Wales and drive north to Scotland via England.

5. On Kerry - Dublin and Kerry are on the one island (Ireland), so ferry is not an option. You can travel by train or road. Kerry is also a county (1800 square miles in area), so distances from Dublin depend on what part of Kerry you are visiting. Typically, Dublin to Killarney in the middle of the county is 192 miles.

6. Train or car are relatively easy options for accessing Kerry from Dublin but having a car for touring while in Kerry is probably recommended.

Dublin to the Orkney Islands - best route is to fly from Dublin to Aberdeen and then take the ferry to Kirkwall in the Orkneys. I doubt if you will need a car in the Orkneys.

Depending where you want to go on Orkney - you will need a car.

We were in the Orkneys in October and had a car. I can't imagine not having one. It will give you a freedom that we definitely wanted.

Enjoy the Orkneys...they are incredible...our favorite part of our trip to Scotland last year.

Certainly you will need some form of transport to get about on Orkney, but depending on how long you intend staying and bearing in mind the car hire, petrol and ferry costs, perhaps it would be cheaper just to use a taxi to bring you around the island. I am sure that the taxi company would be pleased with the trade and with an expert driver to guide you it should work out much cheaper.

Here's a link to a person studying to be an archaelogist who took us touring for a day on Mainland last May; she ("Caz") was quite good and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. We flew from Aberdeen (ABZ) to Kirkwall (KOI) on BA, took 50 minutes.

The tour cost 220GBP. You will need a car for other days; I think W. R. Tullock is the only rental agent.

As I read it the brochure Short Break on Orkney costing £575pps is inclusive of 3 nights hotel B&B, evening meals, pub lunch two days of guided tours and ferries.

This sounds like good value and you probably wouldn't need your own transport if you only intend staying for a few days.
