travel between Killarney and Dublin

We will be traveling from Killarney to Dublin-heading back to fly home from Dublin after traveling around for a week. Any suggestions on anything of interest along the way or a good place to stop for lunch or dinner? Also, about how long will this trip last?

lizmopo, the most direct route from Killarney would be through Castleisland and then along the N21 to Limerick. You could stop in Adare for an early lunch.

Or take a longer route and take in the Rock of Cashel (N72 from Killarney to Mallow, then the N8 all the way to Portlaoise. It's doable. The route planner at www.aaroadwatch.ie will help you with routes and travelling times.

I do that route frequently as I have family in Killarney.

The route the last poster gave is the best one. Up to limerick and on toward Dublin.

Thankfully road improvements have taken an hour and a half off the journey in the last couple of years.

There is a nice place, local restaurant/bakery in Castleisland that we frequent, but it is quite a short distance from Killarney, so we avoid eating in Killarney and usually get lunch there on the way back to Dublin.

They also do a good line in fresh bread/preserves etc. It's called Country Choice and is on the right hand side on the main street as you drive through Castleisland.

The direct route as described by Clauds is the best.

Adare Village is lovely and worth a stop off www.adarevillage.com

Rackett Hall on the Dublin side of Roscrea is a nice place to stop off for some lunch or a cuppa www.rackethallhotel.com

If you like silverware, then consider coming off the motorway at Newbridge and visiting the Newbridge Showrooms. They do some fabulous jewellery in addition to the traditional silverware www.newbridgesilverware.com

The Japanese Gardens and the National Stud are also in Kildare and are worth a consideration.

If you are absolutely stuck for a bathroom or a cuppa, there is a McDonalds on the Roscrea bypass. Its not swanky, its not posh but its one of the busiest McDs in Ireland because of its location. Remember there are no "facilities" on Irish motorways and this is as close as you'll get to one.

Thanks so much for the great information. Very helpful! I have another question- how about any suggestions for our earlier route between Baillieboro in Cavan and Westport? Any route suggestions or places to stop off to eat, see anything of interest?
