Car hire Dublin

Visiting Dublin for 1 day/evening. Not sure what to do about car hire.

Was planning to make our way via taxi or bus to city centre hotel (not sure which one yet) from airport. Having our time in city then going back to airport to rent car which we will then take to the north and return back to airport a few days later when we fly back home. Is this the best thing to do regarding hiring our car or anyone any other ideas

I think that's an excellent plan. You definitely won't need a car in Dulin and heading back to the airport to pick up your car will give you more choice and a far easier journey outof Dublin.

Have a read of the 'Top Questions about Dublin' section on the Dublin Forum and then please do post again if you need any more information.

Other than a taxi.....

The best way to the Merrion - Aircoach Ballbridge service to Merrion Square and then a few minutes' walk to the Merrion. Walk up Merrion Square past the National Gallery on your right and you'll see the hotel on your left.

The best way to the Shelbourne (Marriott) - Aircoach Ballsbridge service to Kildare Street and then about 3 minutes' walk to the Shelbourne. Just keep walking in the direction the coach was travelling up to the junction with Kildare Street and St. Stephen's Green and the Shelbourne is on your left.

Sorry - forgot to mention that each journey will take about 45-60 mins from Dublin Airport, depending on the time of day. The Shelbourne is literally just around the corner from The Merrion.

Thats what we did, the Trinity Capital is a nice hotel downtown and has a free shuttle from the airport. They will also shuttle you back to the airport to pick up your car when you need to. We rented our car from Sixt and they were great.

gosh hadn't realised it took that long. Is it quicker in a taxi and how much is that likely to cost?

A taxi will take on average 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic, and will cost your around €25-30 (again depending on the day/time of day). The airport is about 7 miles north of Dublin city centre and the Shelbourne is in the south city centre.
