May Day holiday

Just realized that my first day in Ireland will be May 1, which is the May Day holiday. We'll be arriving at Dublin airport around 11:30am, so likely won't be settled into our hotel in Dublin until early afternoon. We likely won't be up for a ton of sight-seeing, etc... but will probably want to visit the tourist office to book some day trips, a grocery store to get some supplies for the week, etc... Would these sorts of places be closed that day (or at least have restricted hours)? Also, would any of the tourist websites have a list of sights that are usually closed on these holidays or is the only way to find out by checking the individual websites?

I don't know of any one website which has all of the information you are looking for but you will find it if you do a search on the forums here.

The May Day bank holiday is actually the first Monday in May (the bank holidays in May, June, August and October are always on a Monday). 1st May is a Saturday so the bank holiday will be Monday 3rd May.

With the exception Christmas Day and St. Stephen's Day (26th December) it's pretty much business as usual on bank holidays. Banks, post offices and government offices are closed and some smaller shops may not open. but it's not very different from any other day. Public transport runs to Sunday schedules and in Dublin museums which normally close on Mondays will be closed (plus the Chester Beatty Library which closes on Monday bank holidays).
