2 Week Driving Tour - Tips and Not to be Missed Suggestions!

Hi All

Husband and I making first trip to Ireland last 2 weeks of September. Accommodation all booked - route is Dublin/Kinsale/Dingle/Ennis/Clifden/Ballyconnell/Derry/Belfast - some for 1 night, some for 2.

Am just about to start research and will work my way through all TA has to offer. We love spectacular scenery, historic/period buildings and like to get a real feel of the places we visit.

Any suggestions on scenic routes, eating places along the way, places to visit etc, would be most welcome.

I am also hoping to make a stop in Monaghan as my great grandparents originate from there - has anyone any information on family research in this area,

Many thanks

Liz

Ennis to Clifden is a fair drive the way that I would go. Out onto the coast and follow up past the Cliffs, skirting the Burren arriving in Galway for lunch and an hour wandering around. Head out across the Connemara taking a left to go via Roundstone and dogs bay. but after a full days driving you might be able to relax and take in some of the end of Arts week.

Some historic/period buildings which spring to mind on/near your route from Clifden to Ballyconnell (depending which roads you travel) would include:

Kylmore Abbey, Connemara (Galway)

Westport House, Westport (Mayo)

Definitely a day when you have to do a house, but sorry ragoora, I think my choice would be Strokestown...

In Dingle don't miss the Slea Head Drive and take the Connor Pass road en route to Ennis

Pax House guesthouse gets great reviews here

See the Harry Clarke stained glass windows in the Diseart Centre.

Lots of restaurants, but best high end are Charthouse, Ashes, Global Village and Fentons

Liz,

Leaving Dingle take the Connor Pass and then on way to Ennis head to Tarbert and take the Shannon Ferry across. Not extremely scenic but a fun diversion if the weather is nice you can get out of the car for bit. I believe from Tarbert it leaves on the hour. Check it out beforehand. It only takes about 20 minutes. In Clifden there are two scenic routes. One is from Clifden south across the Roundstone bog then into the village of Roundstone. A bite to eat at O'Dowds is always clutch. Leaving Roundstone head back to Clifden via the Coast Road best at sunset. Clifden also boasts the Sky Road which is awesome.

Dining:

Dingle - Out of the Blue

Clifden - Mitchells

Enjoy,

In Clifden make sure you do the Sky Drive if it is a clear day. This is the small peninsula to the west of the town and must rank as one of the best short drives in the world.
