Day trips from Dublin

We will have 2 free days during our trip to Dublin, and would like to travel to other areas, either with car rental or bus or train. We can take day trips during those 2 days, or do an overnight trip. We are open to all suggestions, such as Galway overnight ? or day or overnight trip to Killkenny/Rock of Cashel/ Cobh ? We love to pack in as much as we can. We want to see rural areas, villages, picturesque Ireland. Please give us some advice. Thanks !

Galway is a good choice, though the more picturesque areas of the western coast are to be found further west. However, Galway would be a good base from which to explore, as it's only about 2.5 hours from Dublin. You could consider an early morning departure from Dublin, getting to Galway late morning. This would allow you the afternoon, evening and the following morning to explore the area before heading back to Dublin. Connemara is an interesting area to explore to the west of Galway as are the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher to the south.

One factor in this is the length of day - you dont state the time of year you are travelling but obviously visting in summer time would allow you to see more in daylight than say a spring or autumn visit. Any schedule you propose should take account of daylight hours, as driving in the dark on small rural roads might be a struggle if you are unfamiliar with the localities and with driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

We will be in Ireland the first week of February. Unfortunately, we know the days are short ! Do you still suggest the Galway area ? or should we stick to the Kilk/Cobh/Cork area as a day trip or overnight? Ring of Kerry in Feb ? Or other suggestions? With car rental or train/bus? Thanks !

We are going to have a 4 night stay in Dublin in January.

And we also wish we will have a day out.

I have checked with this firm

www.coachtoursofireland.com

for a day out to Wicklow which we have arranged with them..

Try them and see what they have on your dates...

Kilkenny from Dublin would be a good choice, but don't try to cram in Cobh/Cork. Take one place and find all it has to offer!
