Rent a car at the airport or in the city?

Where is the best place to rent a car? We are staying in Dublin for two nights and we know we will not need the car in the city. Is it better to backtrack to the airport or rent in the city?

I think renting at the airport is better. The airport is close to the M50 ring road around the city meaning nearly every destination outside the city centre will be easier to get to from here.

If you are interested in driving times and routes etc have a look at http://www2.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/# I have read advice here many times that if you are unfamiliar with Irish roads then you should add at least 10% to the estimated travel times on this web site.

As Lolly suggests, it's much easier get onto the routes out of Dublin if you rent at the airport. Central Dublin is difficult to navigate if you are unfamiliar with the layout, one way streets, pedestrian zones etc. The difficulty can be compounded if you are uncomfortable with driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

However, many of the "downtown" car rental locations such as those for Hertz, Avis and Budget are not in the city centre but are in suburban locations from where it's not particularly difficult to get out of the city. However, if in doubt, I'd head back to the airport - it's only about 8 miles or so from the city centre and not too difficult to access.

If, however, you are heading south from Dublin, you might consider picking up at the downtown Hertz office. Their office is very near the thruway with easy access thereto. Parking a car in Dublin (as well as driving in Dublin) is not easy and can be expensive. Picking up at the downtown Hertz office and dropping off at the Dublin airport incurs no additional cost.

We took a cab back to the airport to rent as the airport location has better hours to pick up and return and a better supply of cars.
