Dublin - Hotel outside city or inside city?

We are concerned about driving in Dublin. Is there public transportation near lodgings outside the city center area so we could park the car and travel into the city to do our sightseeing? We are limited in time to two nights, 1 1/2 days to sightsee, so we don't want to spend all the time getting to and from the city. We currently have a hotel near center city - Best Western Academy Plaza. Is ths a good location for walking to sights if we do stay in the city?

Your hotel is right in the middle of the City. If you want to park the car and travel in by public transport, Bewleys Leopardstown is right on the LUAS tram which is very frequent and takes about 20 minutes or so. Alternatively, the Royal Marine Hotel in Dún Laoghaire is a 3 min walk from the DART train which runs every 15 mins into a selection of 'downtown' stations and takes about 18 minutes. Closer in, try around Ballsbridge - a few hotels - which is on a number of bus routes.

Without a car the Academy Plaza would be perfect. But for an out-of-towner the traffic restrictions, bus lanes and one way system might prove to be a little daunting.

This location might be a good compromise.

We've stayed twice in Malahide. There's both a bus and DART train that go to Dublin on a regular schedule (25- 30 minute trip for DART).

Malahide is a nice seaside town which you might enjoy in the evenings. There are lots of B&B choices.

Barb, your hotel is in a good location, you won't need the car and as already stated it will be a nuisance and parking is expensive. Not sure of your itinerary but consider renting the car after your stay in Dublin.
