Last minute help needed!!! Dublin traffic...

Hi! Our flight just got cancelled and we are arriving 1 day late. Therefore, we arrive in Dublin on Thursday morning at 7am and need to be in Donegal for a 4pm wedding the same day. (Hopefully with enough time to change our clothes first!)

My question is, is there a rush hour? How bad will traffic be? Google maps says it will take 3 hours 10 minutes. Is that close to being accurate?

Thanks for your input. Hopefully the weather here and there will cooperate to get us there in time!

If you're going straight to Donegal, then you won't be going anywhere near the city centre, so traffic will be ok. Whereabouts in Donegal are you going, as that will determine which road you take and how long the journey will be.

The wedding is at Solis Lough Eske Castle.

That's near Donegal town, so you'l go on the N3, via Cavan and Enniskillen. Coming from the airport, you take the M50 southbound to junction 6, then the n3 north. There's motorway all the way to Kells, then a pretty good road to Cavan. Be aware that there are 2 tolls on the N3. You should get there in about 3 hours alright, if not quicker. It's a pretty straightforward drive.

Lovely place for a wedding. As andrama has said you won't run into any rush hour traffic - make sure have some cash to pay the tolls. Take care driving, its a very long drive after arriving from a transatlantic flight.

Some tips for dealing with tiredness whilst driving.

Hopefully you'll have time for a quick nap once you get to the hotel....enjoy the wedding!

Have a look at ......nratraffic.ie /

and...................aaroadwatch.ie /

for upto date traffic.

both are linked to Twitter

using Google MAPS click on "route options"

and click on "Avoid tolls" as the M50 goes out of your way

and the map will show you a more direct route onto the N3

I would advise the OP to not use the "Avoid Tolls" option in Google Maps, for two reasons:

1. there is no toll on the section of the M50 taken anyhow

2. avoiding tolls means taking a slow, cross-country route between the N2 and the N3, to avoid the M3 toll.

Best to stick to the M and N roads.

Definitely take the M50 to get from the airport on to the N3, there is no toll on this stretch of road and it makes no sense to look at an alternative route. The tolls are further along the N3 at Dunshaughlin and near Kells, and trying to avoid them will add a fair amount of time on to your journey, which is not worth it IMO.
