1st timer w/questions on trip based in Dublin

Is it possible to fly in and out of Dublin and see more of Ireland without renting a car? We do not want to drive.....is it possible to take trains/public transport to other areas for day trips or overnights? Any advice appreciated.

Hi there...you may need to post your dates of travel; preferences of places to visit etc to get better recommendations. Do you want visit only cities? Where are you staying in Dublin? Perhaps taking a tour is a better option for you?

We have done two trips to Ireland (and are planning our third) without once hiring a car

I have been researching travel to Ireland and have booked a trip with a small tour company. I plan to go in May 2014. They pick you up at the airport and you travel by small van with no more than 10 people. The trip I am taking is an 8 day trip ending back in Dublin at the airport. They take care of all hotels and handle your luggage.

That's great so it's likely you will hit many of the frequently visited sights in Ireland on the van tour. So in that case yes most definitely basing yourself in Dublin for day trips will work well, as previous posters have said. Having lived in the States our public transport system wouldn't be a match, however, it has come a long way in recent years and more options available to you now with the introduction of public coach/bus companies. If you plan to use our regional train service (www.irishrail.ie) may give you some insight as to locations the train serves and in addition worth keeping your eyes peeled on that site as there are rail deals from time to time.

If you are returning to Dublin airport and wish to head back into Dublin city, perhaps you are basing yourself here, you can jump aboard a Dublin Bus (747) or on the AirCoach - the Aircoach has many drop off points which include hotels, and travels south of the river Liffey (more commonly known as the southside - the airport being located on the northside). The 747 is pretty much city centre bound only

Pay on the bus or coach. (http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/7471/

And www.aircoach.ie

There is a huge amount of information on the forums here about things to do outside of Dublin, places to visit and we are all more than happy to give you suggestions also.

Hoping you are not 'snowed' in - the weather forecast is showing NYC very white.
