End of July Garth concert....how busy

My 14 year old daughter and I will end a CIE tour in Dublin July 26 and 27th. We arrive late afternoon on the 26 staying at Royal Marine Hotel, dinner at Merry Ploughboys pub with a show. The first half of the 27th we have a guided tour of Dublin and the second half of the day is free to use the open-top bus and dinner on our own. We are staying a few extra days so not depart for home (Atlanta) until July 29th. I was thinking we would stay in Dublin those days but see that almost all hotels are booked because Garth Brooks will be in town for several concerts while we are there. I'm concerned downtown will be so packed with everyone in town we will be better off going somewhere else. Thoughts? I had thought about going just north of the airport but not sure where to go. Belfast was a thought but it's 2 hours away from the airport and we fly out at noon on the 29th....not sure I want a 2 hour drive back that morning. Not sure what to do.....Dublin with crowds or go somewhere else. One last thing, as my daughter is a HUGE One Direction fan, she would like to go to Mullingar. :) THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!

Dublin is well used to coping with large crowds especially for football matches and concerts. It may be busy but not unduly so. with regards to Mullingar, there isn't a lot to do there. I stayed there 2 years ago and ended up travelling to Kilbeggan to see the Whiskey distillery there.

Not only are most hotels booked up but some are charging almost double the price they are charging for the same day a week earlier or later..

Mullingar isn't that far a drive from Dublin. Its a nice town.

The Double Steepled Cathedral is beautiful. Belvedere House is about 10 minutes drive from Mullingar is also worth a visit.

The aforementioned Kilbeggan Distillery is also worth a visit.

As has been mentioned large concerts and sports events can make the hotels much busier, but the city itself will be not much busier than normal. Dublin is always busy!!

Your daughter would love to do any of the following things in Dublin, since you will have been moving around quite a bit on your vacation some time in Dublin before heading back to the heat of Atlanta would be lovely. You have so many options of places to stay so this shouldn't be a concern. The hotel you are staying in has vacancy for July 28 and 29th - so depending on your budget this could be an option. However, I have checked your dates on www.trivago.ie and there is a lot of availability on these dates and some are so much less in price for what the Royal Marine cost would cost, and they are reputable hotels. So here is an idea for you....the Portmarnock Golf Links hotel is available and it's situated on the beach on the north side of Dublin - it's a beautiful location and close to Malahide village - a lovely coastal walk. You would be about 15 mins in a cab to the airport on the 29th - so no worries there for rushing around and expensive cab rides on the day of your departure. This hotel has a bus stop right outside the hotel and it takes you to Dublin City Center in about 40 minutes. There is also a bus stop facing the hotel and this takes you to Malahide village in about 5 mins. You could have beach walks every day and a swim in the irish sea. Come back to us if you wish to check out other hotels. Another option is to book a bed and breakfast which would also suit given your daughter's age. Check out http://www.discoverireland.ie for b&b and some activities also.

So what to do with your daughter.

http://www.dublinzoo.ie/ (in Phoenix Park - lovely tea room outside the zoo freshly baked food) take the LUAS tram and walk about 15 mins - city center)

www.museum.ie/en/intro/natural-history.aspx (all city center locations)

http://www.howthhorsetrekking.com/ (not far from Portmarnock but if you stay in city center you can take a Dart train or Dublin city bus here)

Have a fab time in Dublin - you will really enjoy.

HI there - yes Dublin will be very busy! We live up North and have found difficulty getting accomodation for the concert on 26th July. Anyway...... Belfast is great and so handy. You can either get the train from Dublin Connolly Station straight to Belfast where it will leave you at Great Victoria Street - home to one of the ost famous hotels

Everything is within walking distance and you can do the hop on hop off tour which includes the Titanic too. Buses also run hourly from Great Victoria Street to take you directly to the Dublin Airport. Have fun whatever you do.....:-)
