Day trip with hiking from Dublin via train

We'd like to take a day trip from Dublin and do some hiking in a Park if possible. We would also like to see the coast south of Dublin so we were wondering if we could possibly take a train to somewhere, get out hike around and then go back. Our son, who is doing a study abroad in Dubln did that in Bray, but we were wondering if there is a similar area further South so we could see more of the coastline.

There's a good deal of hiking available from Rathdrum, which is on the rail line south of Bray, but it's not on the coast.

In general, the Wicklow and Wexford coastline is full of beaches and isn't somewhere you'd hike, but maybe someone knows of a spot on it.

If we rule out Bray Head, I'm a bit stumped to think of a stretch of coastline anywhere in the country where you can hike and which is easily accessible by train.

Possibly heading westwards, you could go to one of Killarney, Westport or Sligo and get a bus on to the kind of areas you want. The problem there is that they are a bit long for day trip.

An alternative idea would be to hike in Bray and then hop on the train and head south, just for the ride - turn around and go back to Dublin. Does the train hug the coast so it would make sense to do something like this for sight seeing?

Some possibilities for day trips with walking via DART here:

everytrail.com/guide/darting-around-dublin

Another possibility is to walk along the Royal Canal (accessible from the Maynooth train line):

Or get the Saint Kevin's Bud to Glendalough:

May not be exactly what you are looking for but hope there are some ideas there.

The most attractive part of the the journey is the bit you'd be walking between Bray and Greystones, although you would catch it on the way back. The line does stay mostly alongside the sea as far as Wicklow town.

The line between Rathdrum and Arklow is also quite attractive. Peronally, I like the bit between Enniscorthy and Wexford where it runs along the River Slaney, but that's a more gentle rural attractiveness than the drama of the mountains or coast.

There is a walk along the cliffs between Bray and Greystones, which I did the first time there almost 20 years ago. This past summer my wife and I took the DART to Killiney (two stops before Bray) and walked up past Bono's house to the top of Killiney & Dalkey Hills, where you have great views of the coastline, Bray, Martello Towers, the countryside and Dublin itself. Then head North down the other side toward Dalkey and Sandycove. At Sandycove you can jump in the Irish Sea at the Forty Foot! (One of the highlights of our time in Dublin). You can then continue on to Dun Laoghaire and when you are done there, hop on the DART back to Dublin. Maybe take the train south to Greystones etc... so you can see more of the coast first, then come back to do the hike/walk. Have fun!
