Only one day in Dublin: What must we see?

We're only going to be in Dublin for one day, which I know isn't enough time to give it justice, but we're going to give it a good try. What are the absolute MUSTS that we should see? We'll probably take a hop-on hop-off bus to get around.

If you are staying in Dublin, then HoHo is a great way to see the city. sitehttp://www.dublinsightseeing.ie/citytour.aspx. You can buy/print ticket on line for discount. Also review the route, start at a point convenient to your lodgings(you can hop on at any of the stops) and plan your day to visit the optimum number of venues . Many places have guided tours.check those web sites for time(s). If you start early at one of the more popular sites, there might be shorter lines. And do the rest in sequence. Trinity(Book of Kells), Kilmainham Gaol, Guiness are very busy. IMO skip Guiness;. Altho the view from gravity bar is impressive it is not worth the wait if you only have 1 day.

My advice would be to start w/stop #10 Dublin Castle, walk to Christchurch + then St Patrick's, (skip Guiness) Get bus at StPatricks to Kilmainham, Collins Baracks/National Museum, then Jamesons; last Trinity for Book of Kells.

When we were planning a one day layover we planned to start at Trinity College (see the outside, skip the Book of Kells line) and walk over to Dublin Castle (see the outside, skip the tour). Then, check out the Chester Beatty Library. Grab lunch at a local pub. Check out the National Museum of Archaeology and then finish up the day with a stroll down Grafton Street.

It's a circular route you could change around a bit if you want. Getting a HOHO tour is also a great idea because you could go around the route once to see everything and then ride back around to the spots you are most interested in checking out. I have also heard great things about Kilmainham Gaol, St. Michan's, and the Guinness Factory.

We decided that instead of layover we would tack on an additional 3 nights at the end of our trip to give Dublin some justice.
