Our latest itinerary

We will be heading to Ireland for the first time in about a month. This is our latest tentative itinerary. I haven't written down all that we will do at each stop but just wanted to get an idea from others if this is a good route or if we should make some changes:

Day 1: arrive in Dublin, spend the day sightseeing as best we can coming off an overseas flight

Day 2: Bus tour to Belfast/Giants Causeway

Day 3: Get car and head for Galway, stop at Clonmacnoise, See some of Galway, Spend night there

Day 4: Galway, Connemara, spend night in Galway

Day 5: Burren, Cliffs of Moher, Stay in Doolin or Ennis or Dingle? * (We are considering driving straight to Dingle and staying the night there but are concerned about time and distance)

Day 6: Head to Dingle Peninsula, then back to Killarney, night in Killarney

Day 7: Ring of Kerry, spend night in Killarney

Day 8: Head back to Dublin, several stops along the way (Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle?)

Day 9: Flight home in the morning

Ennis above Doolin any day, but a pity not to overnight in Dingle for the craic in the pubs.

Comments below prefixed by @@@@

Day 1: arrive in Dublin, spend the day sightseeing as best we can coming off an overseas flight

@@@@ HOHO bus will be a good idea, at least it will be somewhere to snooze if you pass out ;-)

Day 2: Bus tour to Belfast/Giants Causeway

@@@@ Yes, long day out though after the day before, but if it's what you want to do, it's doable

Day 3: Get car and head for Galway, stop at Clonmacnoise, See some of Galway, Spend night there

@@@@ Leave Dublin as early as your body will allow you if you want to get to Galway in reasonable time to check in and explore. Clonmacnoise will be a very nice half way stop to stretch the legs, have lunch and of course visit the beautiful monastic settlement.

Day 4: Galway, Connemara, spend night in Galway

@@@@ A number of gorgeous looped drives in Connemara depending on how much time you want to spend touring that day.

Day 5: Burren, Cliffs of Moher, Stay in Doolin or Ennis or Dingle? * (We are considering driving straight to Dingle and staying the night there but are concerned about time and distance)

@@@@ No, it's a very good idea to overnight here. Clare deserves at least one overnight. Ennis would be the best base camp in terms of facilities.

Day 6: Head to Dingle Peninsula, then back to Killarney, night in Killarney

@@@@ This will be a tough one for you, probably only leaving you enough time in Killarney to have dinner and a few pints

Day 7: Ring of Kerry, spend night in Killarney

@@@@ Another long day, be prepared. Consider taking a picnic with you. That way you can stop where you like and eat lunch, and have the best "table" on the peninsula.

Day 8: Head back to Dublin, several stops along the way (Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle?)

@@@@ 90 mins to Blarney from Killarney, and then spend about 2 hours there. Another 90 mins to Cahir and spend about 1 hour there (more if you want to visit the Swiss Cottage), then 30 mins drive to Cashel and spend about 90 minutes there, then about 2 hours to the airport to drop off car (if that's what you're doing)

Overall - very busy itinerary, lots of car time, but doable.
