Defintely go and check out the beer festival, I went last year and it was great! I'm going this year too.
It's defintely not walkabale from there! You can take busses 4,7,8 and 18 from Nassau Street (Outside Trinity College) straight to the RDS. Alternatively you could take the DART southbound from Connolloy Station to either Lansdowne Road or Sandymount stations
Here's a link to the "How to get here" page on the RDS website.
The RDS is about a 40 minute walk through Georgian Dublin, if (and it is always a big IF in Ireland) the weather is nice it is a lovely walk through some of the leafy suburbs of Dublin, The route is very straightforward, almost a straight walk from Trinity College to Ballsbridge. The alternative is to take the no. 4, 7 or 8 bus. You can get this bus from O'Connell Bridge or on Nassau Street beside Trinity College.
What days is this open?
4th-7th of September. See http://www.irishcraftbeerfestival.ie/ for the nitty-gritty
