Connemara ponies for family with young kids?

Hello- we will be in Connemara in July- a family with a 10 year old and six year old kids- they have NEVER been on horseback before (other than a pony ride going around in a small circle tied to a rope!) We would love to experience the Connemara ponies in some way while we are there. At a minimum visit and see them. Ideally some riding (but very gentle and appropriate for someone who has never ridden a horse). Even Mom and Dad are real novices- maybe been on a horse once in their lifetimes. Any advice? We will be staying near Letterfrack. Thank you so much!

Call into Dan O'Haras http://www.connemaraheritage.com/

For riding I normally recommend http://www.clegganridingcentre.com/ but for total novice riders http://www.theconnemarapony.ie/?page_id=22 might be an easier option as they offer 1 hour lessons.

Connemara ponies are at the top end of pony size and I see a little conflict in satisfying a 6 year old and adults too (who are possibly too heavy for this size) - all beginners! For a riding experience you'll need a place which has horses and ponies of appropriate size for all.

Connemara ponies were and can be used by small adults.

No self respecting Equestrian centre would put someone oversize on an undersized pony. There is the usual rule of thumb which I am sure Harvey will correct If I am wrong that the rider of a standard pony should be no more than 20%the animals weight, This goes up slightly for the heavier breeds like the Connemara to around 25% Of course these liveries have heavier horses for the heavier souls amongst us..
