Family Trip to Ireland in Oct

Hi Folks,

We're a family of 4 from California who are planning to be in Ireland in the 1st week of October '08. From our research, we think we want to spend 3 days at Galway and 3 days at Kerry.

Some questions for you sage people.

We'd like to stay in a bed& breakfast place or a hotel in a castle in either Galyway or Kerry. Problem is there are so many good B&Bs to choose from. Any recommendations on family friendly B&Bs or castle hotels in Kerry or Galway?

There seem to be so many quaint towns outside Galway. Any recommendations on small towns we could stay at outside Galway? What's a good small town to stay in and see the ROK? Doolin?

Thanks in advance,

-Ivan

There are very few B&Bs that wouldn't be considered family friendly. They can either get all of you in a "family room" or you can get two rooms. (I'd be more of a fan of getting two rooms just so all 4 don't have to share one bathroom, but of course that will cost more usually).

If you want to stay outside of Galway City you might look into Spiddal, a few miles outside of town, on the coast, in an Irish-speaking area.

"What's a good small town to stay in and see the ROK? Doolin?"

Definitely not Doolin, which is in County Clare and several hours drive from the Ring of Kerry. Many visitors use Killarney as their base to tour the Ring.

Well I would say money is not an issue here if 'Castle' type Hotels are in focus.

www.clifden.ie www.connemara.ie and www.connemara.net will give you detailed info on Connemara ,approx 1 hour drive from Galway City.

Guesthouses are larger and better equipped that B&Bs and you might get good ideas and rates by going to :

www.irelandhotels.com where all Hotels will also be listed.

www.townandcountry.ie and www.familyhomes.ie will give you B&B range

Killarney, which is not worst spot to camp for a few days with Ring in mind, can also be targeted for Lodgings with above sites.

www.kingfisherkillarney.com is a favourite of ours with family rooms.

Ivan,

Lets say so money is not too much of an issue because staying in Castle or stately homes is not cheap by any means.

Just outside Galway city

http://www.ballynahinch-castle.com/

Further out in Co Mayo is the famour Ashford in Cong

Around Clifden West of Galway City

Outside of Shannon

http://www.dromoland.ie/

Outside of Limerick(halfway between Galway and Kerry)

http://www.adaremanor.com/

Outside of Tralee

Outside Killarney, not really a castle but has the ruins of a castle in the gardens

Petra House in Galway (city) was wonderful. The hosts were so warm and friendly...I'm not sure how young your kids are but I'm sure they'd be accomodating. The only downside might be that it's a bit of a walk from the city center but I don't see much getting around that. It's also right on the edge og the city (college road, there are abe 30 B&Bs right there) and about 5 minutes to jump back on the main road out of the city to enjoy nearby sights.

The breakfast was probably in my top 3 of the 10 different B&Bs we stayed at in Ireland as well.

Oh and I missed your Doolin reference...we stayed at the Roadford house. Doolin is cute but not sure there's much to see there for a family. We enjoyed the music in the pub though. it's between the Cliffs and Galway, and near the Burren, so good location though. They have a restaurant at the B&B but it was closed when we were there since it wasn't the busy season. They still did breakfast of course. And there were a couple pubs and a cute restaurant less than 5 min walk away.

In Killarney we always stay at The Lake Hotel(WWW.LAKEHOTEL.COM),a beautiful place.

In the Summer we stayed at the Ramada Encore at Orrenmore, just outside Galway City,a nice hotel, excellent prices & some great places to eat nearby.

Ramada Encore in Oranmore Galway is now closed down.

Sign of the times.

Check out the theme rooms in the Lake Hotel. A little tacky but worth a look. Bathtubs in the middle of bedrooms, whatever your into yourself. LOL

That's a real shame & shock about the Ramada,it seemed to get many good reviews on TA & we were planning a short break there by air as it is so handy for the airport,ah well think again!

We've stayed at the Lake Hotel twice now & the same result,on arival open the doors,go out on to the balcony & just the sheer beauty of the view & the silence is amazing, the only trouble is it can be so quiet that you notice the sounds from the plumbing & the fridge more!
