town/village near Galway

Looking for a town/village close to Galway that we can base ourselves from for 4-5 days. Want to do trips to Aran Islands, the Burren, Cliffs of Moher, Galway and lastly go to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park.

We can make Bunratty a stop on our way to Dingle Peninsula.

We will have a car.

We just need options since the Volvo Ocean Race is taking place in Galway while we are in Ireland.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as possible places to stay, keeping around 1oo Euros a night.

One the Clare side, but great for the Burren and Arans from Doolin:

If you wanted to be a bit closer to Galway you could try Kinvarra.

Like the previous post

Kinvara is a lovely little picture postcard village and would be a fab place to stay. Ballyvaughan (in Co. Clare) would be nice too.

You could try Oranmore in Co. Galway - a more build up village with lots to do including its own cinema. Beware of driving into Galway tho (to catch the aran island bus for ferry) the traffic tends to get clogged up coming into Galway from here in the mornings.

You could also try Spiddal in Co. Galway (other side of Galway) - this is at the gateway of Connemara and is a gaeltacht area (Irish speaking) although most people will speak English as well, - lovely little village and just a few miles from the ferry to the Aran Islands.

Or try Barna - perfect located just outside Galway (in between Galway and Spiddal)

Going by what you want to do , I think the best options for you would be the Kinvara/Oranmore side - especially if you are taking the Aran Island ferry from Doolin and not Rossaveal.

Thanks for the help. Another thing, we will be driving to the Galway area from Dublin, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

We would like to avoid the Galway traffic if at all possible,so also would like a location where we could get some sort of transportation in and out of Galway (so we can avoid the traffic and parking).

So, would one of these areas be better?

Again, thanks.

If travelling to the West from Dublin, you don't need to go anywhere near Galway City. The N6 goes as far as Oranmore and you make the choice at the roundabout to go towards limerick (away from Galway towards Clare) or into Galway City.

Oceanville also have a tiny traditional cottage overlooking Galway Bay and right beside Monks Pub :-)

normally I would say that if you are worried about regular transport in and out of Galway on a daily basis that you should stick to the West Side of Galway (ie. Salthill/Barna and Spideal) (beach areas of galway) but because this ocean race is going on I don't know what the traffic will be like during this time. The way people are talking it seems like the place will be choc a bloc, but then again this could be all hype and fever trying to work people up about something that might be as boring as hell.

Re. regular buses from Oranmore - they do have buses from Oranmore but probably only a few times per day, i.e. not a regular every half hour timetable, but I will have to check that further for you. Same for ballyvaughan.

Can I suggest you try to make galway city your base, but stay in one of the suburbs like Newcastle, Rahoon, clybawn - that way you have regular transport and can still make the aran islands and cliffs, but you won't be in a small village. You would be walking distance from galway city tho.

There are regular buses during the hour from Oranmore town centere(5 mins walk from the actual village) as well as a local dedicated services from the village it is also a hub for all provincial services passing through on their way to the city eg the Dublin bus passes every hour as well as the Cork bus as other local services. I have never waited more then 15 mins for a bus during the day into the city.

here is a timetable for the Oranmore Galway/Galway Oranmore bus - I will try to find out some more that might suit you in the evenings. This services seems to stop quite early in the evening

I still say check out the suburbs of Galway city- its a great base for the things you want to do.

Given your itinierary, Its mainly Clare attractions so Oranmore is probably your best bet with regular buses into the city.

It means you can avoid normal Galway traffic and are less than half hour from the burren and within about an hour 1:15 to the rest of your attractions.

We stayed in Oranmore last Summer at a nice new Ramada Inn which was significantly cheaper than hotels in Galway,as has been said there is a regular bus service from there into Galway & a number of nice places to eat(Keanes is very good),the place is pretty popular though & can get pretty busy.

My vote is for Kinvarra. If you are staying there for 3 or 4 nights, Kinvarra's the choice. It has a few places to eat and 10 or more pubs to choose from. Very quaint fishing town. Oranmore is your standard suburb with strip malls and such. Your new favorite place will be Greene's, the friendliest pub in Ireland. Dunguaire Castle is on the other side of the harbour and the Pier House is a fantastic restaurant.
