Galway, Ireland to Amsterdam

I will be spending about a week in the Galway area and then heading to Amsterdam for a few days. I would like to know the best way to get there. Train, air and/or ferry?

Flying will take a matter of hours, overland a matter of days.

You can fly from Dublin to Amsterdam with Aer Lingus www.aerlingus.com

Your best option is flying.

Aer Lingus fly from both Cork and Dublin to Amsterdam. If you book enough in advance (and it's not during the school holidays), you should get a fare for around €40 single or €100 return (the leg back is higher because of Dutch departure tax).

Citylink have bus routes to both Cork Airport and Dublin Airport from Galway. The bus journey to Cork is a small bit longer.

The advantage of Cork Airport is that it's smaller and you can get through it pretty quickly. The disadvantage is that there is less to do if you find you have time to kill there.

There's 5 flights a day from Dublin and 2 flights a day from Cork.

BTW I did the journey from The Hague to Ireland by train during the volcanic ash crisis. It took about 18 hours overall and involved 4 trains and a boat.

Not to be recommended.

Your only other options for cheap flights would be Dublin to Eindhoven and then train to Amsterdam.

Be aware that the Eindhoven option costs over €20 single to Amsterdam and takes an hour and a half to get there, so you would want to get a seriously cheaper price to consider it. There is a bus though, so the pain of getting into Eindhoven City Centre and then getting a train is gone.

If you can be flexible about time and date, you should get a decent price to Amsterdam on Aer Lingus from one of Dublin or Cork.Just don't leave it to the last minute. The routes are heavy wih business travellers, so the prices shoot up in the last 2 weeks.

If you're destination is somewhere else in The Netherlands and you were just planning on flying to Amsterdam for that reason, the Eindhoven option may be more attractive.
