Aran islands visit--can it be done in less than a full day?

Is there any way to do a short visit to the Aran islands and combine that with seeing other sites along the Connemara coast, or is it an either/or proposition? We'd be starting at Ballynahinch.

Assuming you'll be taking the ferry over, you are looking at the better part of the day for a "day trip" (10:30a ferry to Inis Mor and 5:00p return as an example).

I suppose if you want to take a custom trip over by plane, you could but there is no way you'll be able to see everything there is to see, in just a couple/few hours.

If you enjoy flying, and cost is not an issue, then you may enjoy a scenic flight over the Aran Islands, from Connemara Airport:

My husband might enjoy that. Maybe he can drop me somewhere known for its shopping and go off on a scenic flight.

The airport is located in Inverin, just west of the village of Spiddal (known for its shops).

You could take the Innis Orr and cliffs cruise from Doolin if its just a case of popping to one the three Islands. Assuming the plan is still coming down from Mayo through Co.Galway then going back to Rossaveal from Ballyvaughan is backtracking a little.

Flying might be an option and I believe they do offer sight seeing flights from the airport

Depending on the amount of the Connemara coast you want to cover then it can take from a couple of hours to a full week (or more) If you are staying in Ballynahinch then you could be at Ros or the Airport in just about an hour. The R336 is a fairly good road but being built over the blanket bog undulates like a choppy sea, you won't be driving it in a rush. And do not miss the left turn signed for the Airport or you will be following the loop round past Carra back to where you came from.

Coming from Ballynahinch your journey time to the Connemara departure point/s for the Aran Islands (flight or ferry) is, as Tony says, around an hour each way so do factor that in as well - we used to live ten minutes drive away from Ballynahinch and would always think of visiting the Aran Islands as a full day trip although we always took the ferry...

If memory serves correctly the hotel itself offers some trips, including the Aran Islands, and they may be able to help you out on transfers, exact timings, alternative activities whilst your husband is island-hopping (shopping in Galway?) and fitting in other Connemara sites as well - I'd suggest that you drop them an email to concierge to enquire further. They also have a heli-pad so maybe able to organise and create a half-day bespoke itinerary for you?

If it's just a case of visiting an off-shore island whilst you're in Connemara then you might be better looking at a visit to the lesser visited and highly delightful Inishbofin off the northern Connemara coast rather than the Aran Islands as the departure point (Cleggan) is much nearer to Ballynahinch and a partial day-trip is more possible:
