Dublin to County Kerry and where to base ourselves

We are thinking of flying to Dublin and then driving from there to County Kerry, as the first part of a two week vacation - about one week in County Kerry, and just under a week in County Clare (or the reverse order). How long would it take us to drive from Dublin to County Kerry? And a second question: if we are interested in doing a lot of walking, where is a good place to base ourselves in County Kerry? Thanks.

Why don't you fly into or depart from Shannon.?

While Ballinskelligs is beautiful, it is probably not the best base if you wish to see other parts of Kerry.

The Dingle Way offers a lot of walking options. http://www.dingleway.net/

Sneem would also be a good choice. When are you going?

I believe I have already recommend some sources for hikes in County Kerry and County Clare to you in another thread.

We only had 4 days for our County Kerry and 4 nights for Country Clare. In County Kerry, we based ourselves in Kenmare for 2 nights and in Ballinskelligs for 2 nights. I think it makes sense to have a base at each end of the ROK, so you aren't spending a lot of time driving to get to your hiking spots. (There are plenty of hiking opportunities in each area.)

Also, like Harvey, I wonder why you don't go in and out of Shannon as opposed to Dublin.

We had thought of flying to Shannon, but it turns out that from Tel Aviv, we can only fly British Air to Shannon (or Cork) and these flights are much more expensive than if we fly to Dublin, where we also have a bigger choice of flights and times, and do the 4 1/2 hour drive. We haven't taken a final decision yet on the flight issue.

We're looking for a single base rather than having to move B and B's.

We're going mid-July. Another consideration for us is that we prefer a place that is not "touristy".

The drive from Dublin to Killarney in Co.Kerry takes about 4 hours,it's around 200 miles,it will,of course depend on any delays you get due to traffic but it is Motorway most of the way.

Kenmare is a lovely little town and I would say it's not very touristy. If you're gonna spend a couple of weeks in the west, Dingle is a must.
