Things to do with children in Killarney

I am travelling to Kliiarney on the August bank holiday weekend with my husband and two children.

Can anyone give me tips on where to take the children.

Depends on the ages of the children. Being in Killarney gives easy access to the national parks and mountains so you could take time walking in the woods or the mountains and go on a mission to find a specific plant or animal.

There were old copper mines on Inishfallen island 4000 years ago, you could have them go on a treasure hunt.

If they are not up to walking in the hills you could visit Muckross house where the large grounds between the house and the sea is typically full of kids running and playing, you could bring a ball.

The guides a Muckross house, which is the HQ of the national park, would probably have suggestions and may even have specific activities for kids.

You are also within driving distance of the ocean on the Ring of Kerry at Waterville etc, if you wanted to take them to the beach.

There is a newly opened leisure centre, with swimming pool, indeed the Gleneagle hotel and others also have pools.

The Aquadome 20 miles away in Tralee is water-sports venue popular with children.

Kennedys Pet Farm is a popular spot about 5 miles out the Cork road

There is a funfair in the town park which opens in the evening.

There may be more things, but I have never had to take kids to Killarney myself.

Have a look at inside pages for "tonyirish", where he has a really helpful article "Killarney Family Travel with lots of ideas (plus some other suggestions under the following headings: day trips; parks and gardens; jaunting cart rides).

I personally recommend a trip to the Gap of Dunloe; whether you decide to walk through all or part of the Gap, or take a jaunting car, it's a beautiful spot. Have a look at the following site for pictures of the Gap; it's one that tonyirish has recommended in the past:

Muckross House is a super place for a family day out. Whether you tour the house (might depend on the age of the children!!), or visit the grounds, there's alot to see and do:

Hope you have a great weekend!
