Killarney and Dublin trip- rent a car or no?

I am planning a trip to Ireland in July. We plan to fly into Dublin, head down to Killarney and Coutny Kork for 4 days, and then spend the last 3 in Dublin before flying out?

I have read mixed reviews about renting a car. Are there alternate ways to get to Killarney? Do you recommend renting a car for the first part, then using transit while in Dublin? Any help would be appreciated! There will be 4 of us!

Renting a car will give you great freedom to go to out of the way places and to stop and go as you like. Train/bus network is generally fine between cities, but not efficient for smaller towns/attractions. You won't need a car in Dublin-and will find life easier without one there.
