Killarney, do or don't

We are first time travelers to Ireland, and would like some advice.

We were planning to fly into Shannon and out of Dublin. Staying in Limmerick, Killarney, and Dublin. However, RIck Steves is really harsh on Killarney in his latest Guidebook. He says it is very unathentic and a tourist trap. What is your opinion on Killarney's authenticity?. Any suggestions for cities to stay in for an authentic Irish experience would be great. Planning on renting a car. We would like to stay in three- four cities. And fly into/out of Shannon/Dublin, and make our way across, to fly/into out of the oppsite airport.

We were planning to stay in larger cities (as mentioned above) and take day trips out by car. Thank you for your time!

If you're only in Killarney for 2 nights and arriving and leaving by train, I would suggest you consider taking a tour from either Deros or O'Connors.

Take a Gap of Dunloe tour (both operators do this) or get a cab out to Muckross in the morning and see Muckross House and Gardens and then do Dero's Highlights of Killarney tour in the afternoon.

You can also rent bikes to tour the park. You can see a lot that way
