Day trips from Adare with kids

We are very excited about our trip to Ireland this June. We booked a package that includes a 7 night stay at the Adare Manor Villas. We have 10 year old twin girls and we are looking for day trips from Adare. We love being outdoors, but also enjoy fun shops, cities, beaches, castles. We hope to visit some touristy sights, but also meet the locals. We've even considered a day trip to Dublin by train. Other thoughts are Cashel, Muckrock House, Killarney National Park, Dingle Pennin, Burren/ Cliffs of Moher. Our ideal would be spending a couple days in a few places, but we are locked into Adare. (which sounds very nice) Any advice would be wonderful.

Adare is lovely and you should have a wonderful time there. For a relaxing day, as it's close, you can spend time in Limerick City. King John's Castle and the Hunt Museum should keep you entertained. Also, Lough Gur is close buy and a nice day out.

I do recommend Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Cashel, Killarny (Muckross House, Killarny National Park). That should keep you busy for 7 days.

Some other suggestions would be

Take a day trip to Fota Island Wildlife Park www.fotawildlife.ie

This is a very well managed and ethical location. They also have some very good breeding programmes so there is a good likelihood that you will see some "babies" when you are there.

Visit Birr Demesne, home of what was once the world's largest telescope www.birrcastle.com

Also in this area is the Bog Train www.offaly.ie/offalyhome/visitoffaly/Attractions/Family/bog+train.htm

If you are going to the Cliffs of Moher, consider driving down the coast to Tarbert and taking the ferry over to Kilimer. It will most likely take you longer (you could come back via Limerick City) but its a fun trip www.shannonferries.com

Also consider visiting Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

Our kids never tire of this attraction and we only live a short drive away.

For things to do in and around Adare visit www.adarevillage.com. On your doorstep you will find Curraghchase www.curraghchase.com a large estate with mansion house, sadly ruined, which belonged to poet Aubrey DeVere. Also Celtic Theme Park and Gardens in Kilcornan 00353 61 394243, kids under 12 free. Take the kids to a real farm www.stonehallvisitorfarm.com. Slightly further afielsd in Co.Kerry you'll find fantastic beaches at Ballybunion, Ballyheigue and Banna Strand, have a bracing dip in the Atlantic. Take the N69 Coast Road and visit Glin Castle and the Foynes Flying Boat museum en route. This is where the first transatlantic flights landed before Shannon Airport was built. Enjoy your visit.
